Q: CUI CUI CUI error 10.7.3 all apps crashes

good luck. I am still holding off as 10.7.2 is still really good on my Macbook Pro, so I'll wait a few days to see if there are any real problems.

After reinstalling 10.7.2 via recovery partition and running the combo updater my finder still crashes ;-( Going back in time now.

the downloaded DMG combo update didn't solve anything.

I went back to 10.7.2 via time machine.

With a Lion recovery USB stick, this is what I did:

- launch the recovery disk holding the option key during boot

- start disk utility, mount the combo update image

- start terminal, and run "installer -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.7.3\ Update\ Combo/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.pkg  -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD"

- note that the target parameter might differ depending on your startup disk's name.

- wait until the command finishes. (about 5-15 minutes)

- restart

- glory!

Same here with Macbook Pro 15 inch (2010). Mac Mini works fine after update. Macbook Air I do not dare to do. Very weird to get button boxed filled with red question marks and Blue/Yellow CUI background in all windows.

This also worked for me while booted from the broken system itself. Here's the commands I used to download and install the combo update without using the GUI at all. I did it over SSH, but it would probably work if Terminal will load. Since the update is rather large, if it gets interrupted you can rerun the curl command to resume the download.

$ curl -C - -LO https://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1484/en_US/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg

$ hdiutil attach MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg

$ sudo installer -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.7.3\ Update\ Combo/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.pkg -target /Volumes/Twitch\ HD

$ sudo reboot

Love to try it, but what is SSH?

This is exactly what I did today. Go to the Recovery regime, (cmd+R during boot) and choose Install Lion and select the system disc where Lion is alredy installed as the target. It reinstalled the system (apparently including the latest system update that caused this issue) and now I'm back working. Took approx 2 hours for me.

The SSH approach is probably the easiest, but problem is that most people (like me) don't have the ssh deamon running. And because system preferences won't launch there's no way of enabling it (well at least I didn't find one).

Then a recovery disk/stick is the only way.

Here is what I'm doing.

Since the Terminal wont start under broken OS, i cant download 10.7.3 combo update from my OS.

Instead I booted into Lion Recovery Partition (on my Time Machine disc - holding Option during boot), and selected "browse for help online" so I can use Safari (I'm writing this from recovery partition!).

Now I'm downloading the combo Update from https://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1484/en_US/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg

https://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1484/en_US/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.dmg(selected to save file as... and selected my Macintosh HD).

When It's finished, I hope to:

- start disk utility, mount the combo update image

- start terminal, and run "installer -pkg /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ 10.7.3\ Update\ Combo/MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.3.pkg  -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD"

- wait until the command finishes. (about 5-15 minutes)

- restart

Just as syberyan did.

I'll post results if succesfull.
