10.7.3 nothing works

If "nothing"works, which seems odd, boot to the recovery partition and reinstall Lion. Post a screen shot or link to a video so we can userstand what you're seeing.

The reinstall will not overwrite your profile/documents/etc, but it will get Lion to a usable state for reapplying the update.

You will mainly only see people with issues on these boards however some have taken the time to post their success with this build too. I think people are having issues with the installation.

Yes, in general, the forums contain issues more than hoorays. 😢

I've upgraded 30 machines an no issues. I decided to upgrade my personal laptop last so that any potential challenges hit my staff before me. Cruel huh?

However, I did discover an issue with applying the 10.7.3 combo update on my machine. All applications closed, used the same combo package as all the other updates and install finished successfully. Shutdown caused a Spinlock acquistion timed out error (see screen shot) and a kernel panic. Could be due to a host of things but a hardshut down completed the installation perfectly.

After the update, disk permissions will uncover 'usr/share/collabd/webauthd/locales' permissions issues. Repair permissions should fix it. It's nothing, very common and doesn't hurt performance. It would also may be cleaned up after one of the weekly or monthly scripts. Don't fret that.

One last thing, your Mac will run slow after the 10.7.3 update. This is normal and expected given the proceedures happing during the update. Don't purge your caches, don't use Onyx for goodness sake, don't boot to safe mode, don't defrag, just let it be. Be patient and performace will return to normal after a few hours onces everything is cached.

@MegaJustice - I appreciate your professional experience, so I ask: "Why not use Onyx for goodness sake?"

Also, if Onyn is not a good routine maintanence tool to run scripts, repair permissions, etc. what tool would you recommend?

If use of the Terminal is how you do maintanence, what are the command lines you enter?

So, Onyx is a fine tool written by good people. It is often misused and it is expected to be a fix-it-all. So, you purge, logs, caches, DS stores, run every script in the world, then......"My Mac is still slow...." so the natural reaction is, run it again. Bad...

Think of a Mac like a house, it gets built then it settles down with use. Like a house, a Mac doesn't need mainteance in all areas at the same time. There are dependancies and interrelated caches, files and scripts. A Mac will purr if you configure it and leave it on for a few days, non-stop.

In my experience, people use Onyx to paint the house, mow the yard, remodel the kitchen, do a termite inspection, replace the windows, clean the bathroom, replace all the locks and scrub the walls with bleach then ask........why does my front door still squeek when I open it?

In my experience, there are three courses of action. With Lion, things actually got much simpler.

First, know that applications are typically the first problem. Little snitch, browser plug ins, applications that use undocumented APIs...these are the issues that are often forgot. Check the start up items, know what's running, and ensure the Activity Log doesn't contain rogue processes. I know there is an issue with 10.7.3 and Quark, it will get resolved and it surprised everyone. In my experience, Quark does not behave well with any update.

Second, permissions. The Disk Utility is a great tool but there is one limitation, it doesn't validate and reset the permissions of the home folder of the user. Use the reset password function to do this.

Use the reset Home folder permissions and ACLs. Espcecially if you have had a Mac for a long time. Case in point, I started a home folder with OSX Tiger....move all the way to Lion. Beach balls, slowness, I was beginning to think I owned a Windows PC. My wifes computer was super fast and had 1/2 the memory and less processor. After resetting the home folder permissions, it was NIGHT and DAY. I didn't believe it and moved through the office to each Leopard and Snow Leopard machine....in each case...home folder permissions were the issue.

Third, reinstall Lion using the Recovery Assistant. What? Reinstall? Yes. It's not like a Windows PC - by the way, this is the problem too. Windows users think like a PC when they use a Mac. Using the Recovery Assistant it reinstalls lion with the right structure, setup and configuration for a base install. It doesn't wipe out your home folder, it just creates a stable system based on a configuration that works for all Apple hardware.

In the end, it's software and each day, people will discover things, incompatabilities and such. If you use the three steps above, 90% of the issues are resolved in a few minutes to an hour.

The remaining 10% in my experience, is all hardware related. The process is different for that but if you can reproduced the issue at a Genius bar and you have Apple Care, then you get a solution every time. We switched every employee to a Mac years ago and we have 6 year old machines that are still working like the day we bough them. We simply buy new Macs, give them to the oldest employee and hand down the old ones. From the newest to the oldest, this ensures that we spend very little on support and maximize every Mac.

Just upgraded to 10.7.3. Now many application will not load, Safari, Mail, Iphoto, About this Mac and probably more which I have not checked. Cannot get on internet as Safari has crashed. I get the unexpectly quit message. I did install Microsoft Office 2011 just before upgrading so this makes me suspicious. A terrible problem. I guess I will have to restore from my last backup.

either you (apple) do not release an uppdate such a this one , where people lose entire day to fix your Mess !!!

or either you explain a better way to uppdate , a safer way !!!! BIG ONE

More importantly, take a deep breath, your computer is very important and it ***** when it is broken. Fortunatly, this can be fixed. If you follow the steps above, we'll help you till it's resolved.

Nothing wrong with OnyX, it is only a good interface for existing OS functions. Of course it will slow things down until the various caches re-populate. It has sorted problems for me, especially wifi connections and bad cookies.

I think some people are having Spotlight re-indexing which slows things for an hour or so. If you click on the icon in the top right corner of the screen it will show a progress bar, but don't watch it unless you like watching paint dry.

The CUI problem is being blamed on the 10.7.3 System Update, but then I know very many people who have had no such problem at all. There is good advice here as to what to do.

If you are wise you will already have an external bootable backup clone. The full installer is available on MAS and it's a good idea to download it eventually (after the servers are less busy) and copy it to the clone.
