5GHz channels no longer available after upgrading to 10.7.3

I'm currently using Late-2009 iMac and for some reason after upgrade to 10.7.3 I couldn't connect to any 5GHz network at all. In the System Profiles, Wi-Fi menu now says:

which now lacks the upper channels previously supported (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140, 149, 153, 157, 161, 165); I wonder if this is intentional, if so, for whatever reason did Apple decided to disable 5GHz support for this particular build (which previously worked flawlessly)

Interesting. If you can still connect via wired (or 2.4GHz wireless), I would download the 10.7.3 combo update from apple support and reapply it. It appears the driver and family did not fully install with the update.

If you re-install the combo update and you still do not have 5GHz channels, please open the System Information tool and post all of the text you see on the right for WiFi. E.g.:

Also, it would be interesting to see the contents of the appropriate driver direcotry for wireless. If the fresh install of the combo update does not fix your issue, open a terminal and do:


cd /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns

ls -la


Then post the results in this thread.


Also, in the same terminal do:


sudo kextstat


and post the output to this thread.

Yes, but this is a problem with 5GHz channels no longer supported by the card; I'm not sure if disconnect and reconnect going to help anything (I did disconnect, PRAM reset, NVRAM reset, cleaning caches, etc. but nothing works).


My Wireless router is Time Machine 3TB. I'm about 5 meters away from the router, my other machine (MacBook Pro) can connect to it just fine.

I've followed your suggestion and installed a combo update (over existing 10.7.3), 5GHz support on my iMac is now back!

I have a Time Capsule, Airport Extreme and an 21.5 iMac mid-2011 which I bought in Australia before moving to Germany.


It has driven me crazy trying to work out why my iMac cannot see my 5ghz wireless network (from TimeCapule and extended by my Airport Extreme). The mac Mini and 2 iPads (first and second generation) could both see the 5ghz network ok.


After weeks of looking at this I finally got to this thread and I followed the advice on checking the channels set in the Airport config and those available for WiFi (using "about this mac" from the Apple menu).


The Airport will let me chose a country in AsiaPac and was set to Australia (I could also pick from 7 countries including Vietnam, Hong Kong, NZ etc) ... I could not set any other countries outside that region. When I chose "about this mac" on the Apple menu I see the WiFi settings are:

Locale: APAC

Country Code: DE

Supported Channels: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 100, 104, 108, 112, 116, 120, 124, 128, 132, 136, 140


I found that channel 48 was common to AU and DE (listed above) so I set the Airport channel to 48 and now my iMac can see the 5ghz network finally.


Still windering how to get them all in sync as I cant see how to alter either config (previously the I had the 5ghz channel set to 152) ??


But at least it is working ...

Happened to me also on my mid 2011 imac running 10.7.4. What I did was set the "Country" on my time capsule to "Singapore" and leave both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels to automatic. After restart, all the Support Channels shown up and I'm able to connect to the time capsule on its 5GHz network.


Based on some posts elsewhere, it seems like OS X set its Airport country parameter and Supported Channels based on the country that the OS sees in the airport express/time capsule during start up. Not the time zone in the Preference.


So what I did was setting the "Country" on my time capsule to "Singapore" and leave both 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels on automatic. After restart, all the Support Channels shown up and I'm able to connect to the time capsule on its 5GHz network.
