I have a toshiba laptop with windows 7. I just got a new i pad 1. Can I set it up using my laptop?

Hi, I just received and apple ipad 1. I have never been fortunate enough to have an apple computer. All of my computer time is on my Toshiba Satellite desktop running Windows 7. I know very little about the ipad. I was told by a friend that you need to hook it to your computer to set it up. He has alwasy had a mac however and is not familiar with windows. So, I was wondering if I can connect the ipad 1 to my laptop with Windows 7 to set the ipad up? Also, can I access the information I have saved on my laptop from the ipad. If so, do I need a particular program or app?

Thanks Onion99, I actually have a wireless network and was able to set it up wirelessly. As I said I was a new user. I have since gotten an iPad2 and did the same thing, worked perfectly. Now, I was given an Aiport Extreme 5.7 and have set it up and can even print wirelessly, but it doesn't seem to be getting the distance I was expecting. It is hooked to my wireless router with ethernet cable, but I am running two laptops. When I am working at the desk near the router and Airport, I am getting speeds of up to 18Mpbs, but when I go next door, about 50 feet I am only getting up to 4Mpbs wireless speed. I don't have a 2.4gz phone, so that isn't causing intereference. I am usually only running one laptop at a time, but I have a friend coming and she will be connecting the same network. Do you have any knowledge or this Airport and how I can get the speeds I want at a distance. I should add that without the airport, I get the same speeds at either laptop location. I have 20Mbps wireless service and don't have any interruptions as I did with lower speed.
