Need more volt from the FireWire port

Hi there,

I work at a photo studio, and we just bought a new mac Mini to power a rather old Phase One digitalback. This device requires quite an amount of power, and it appears that Apple made the voltage output of the FireWire port drop with 200mV on the new intel motherboards.

My question is: Can you, in anyway, get that voltage output up again?

If this means playing around with dangerous settings, then be it. We just need it to work!

We tried to buy a Lindy FireWire 800 Repeater, with an external powersupply, but dosen't work at all. Perhaps it's just a poor repeater? Is there any other devices out there, that could make it work? Perhaps some solution with a battery attached to the FireWire cable it self. I don't know!

I hope any of you guys have experience with this 🙂

Have a nice day, and thanks in advance.

Not all FireWire hubs are created equal as not all USB hubs either, what I mean is my Belkin powered USB hub will power my pocket HDD but my partners D-Link powered USB hub will not.

Apple when they re-developed the Mini had to change the PSU to make it fit inside the Mini and so in doing so the power output had to drop in some areas like FireWire - I take it that the 'Phase One Digitalback' is totally powered off the FireWire ?

If possible I would return the Lindy hub and look for one with a PSU of around 1 Amp if possible or 500mA at worst.

Hope this helps

Custom mini.

I had the same problem with my PhaseOne H20. Get this Belkin firewire hub.

It works, using it right now. I measured the output of my Macbook Pro 4,1 and it has 7v output, with the hub it is 12v. We have a titanium G4 Powerbook that would power it fine. I'm going to measure it's output to see what is needed to power the back.

PhaseOne makes a portable solution if you can find one on ebay, kinda pricey. I'm wondering about a special cable to borrow power from the unused firewire 800 port. The hub works fine unless you need to shoot in the field with no power. I'm also looking into using batteries to power the hub as an option so as not to drain the laptop battery. I'll update this when I get some more info.

Good Luck,

Mark

Update - The voltage output of the firewire port of my Titanium G4 Powerbook is 16v, big difference to the 7v of my Macbook Pro. However the output of the Belkin hub is 12v so we know 7v is not enough to run the back but 12v is.

We also use a G5 iMac that was originally why we needed the Belkin hub. It's FW400 output 11.73v but it will not power the H20 back. I think it's safe to say that 12v is what the PhaseOne H20 needs to run as voltage from the hub is12v.

I may look into adding the 7v from the firewire 800 to a custom cable I'll build that will add the 7v from the FW800 port to the supply line of the FW400 port there by delivering 14v over pin 1 of the FW400 cable as the back had no problem with the 16v from the G4 Powerbook. Still this will impact battery life which is partially why Apple dropped the voltage in the first place.

A custom battery pack may be the best route to just power the hub when AC is not available.

The PhaseOne Portable solution is basically a small box with a camcorder battery on it that supplements the incoming voltage and I think it conditions/stabilizes the voltage as well.

I'll update any solutions I come up with.

Hey, were you eventually able to build your custom solution? The firewire repeaters seem to be quite pricey, considering that all I need is to put 12V and >1.5A to the Vcc of the firewire cable, at least this article states so: https://www.phaseone.com/search/article.aspx?articleid=1858&languageid=1
I think my power adaptor (12V-2000mA) for my external HDD should work fine with it, or is there any risk of ruining my H20?

-Thanks
