can't sync music albums from itunes to my ipad

Help! I have a bunch of music files/albums in my itunes library from my computer, but I can NOT get them onto my ipad! I keep reading about clicking the "sync" button, but there IS NO SYNC BUTTON ANYWHERE! I tried dragging and dropping, but that won't work either. I am so frustrated!

  1. Connect the iPad to your computer.
  2. Launch iTunes
  3. Select the iPad name on the left side of the iTunes window under devices
  4. Click on the Music Tab in the window on the right - at the top of iTunes
  5. Click on all of the albums, artists or playlists that you want to sync
  6. Click on the Sync Music heading as well - it must be selected also
  7. Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

I turned off my computer AND my iPad. I went into the settings on the pad and discovered IT had itunes match on. So I turned it off. I turned everything back on. I brought up iTunes again and attached my device again to my computer. Now when I click on my pad's name and music, I get the option to "Sync Music.." Everything else is greyed out! When I click on Sync Music it tells me that it will wipe out everything else on my ipad! When I tried to sync some files and ebooks last week, it said the same thing. I managed to get around this by dragging and dropping into my books, which worked. However, it will NOT work with the music. I even tried opening the album in the library and dragging and dropping just one song. No go. I do NOT want to wipe out everything on my ipad, nor do I want ALL the music on it that is in my iTunes library (18+GB). Could I possibly just go into my library and delete each album (just the ones I know are from my computer) and then just manually add them one by one and THEN try dragging and dropping?

You can manually manage music by dragging and dropping, but you have to configure iTunes first. This article explains how to do it.

The reason that iTunes wants to erase your iPad (I think) is because you have not transferred purchases into your iTunes library. I am also guessing that you have never synced with your computer before. You want to make sure that you are signed into the same Apple ID on the computer as you are signed into on the iPad - again I am assuming that you have an Apple ID and iTunes account.

In order to transfer purchases, connect the iPad to the PC, launch iTunes and right click on the iPad name on the left side and select - Transfer Purchases. When you do that - iTunes should now recognize your iPad and not want to erase it. You have to associate your iPad with your iTunes library before you can sync without erasing the device.

I have been using my iPad with my computer for over a month and a half. I have rented movies, bought music, downloaded podcasts, bought apps, etc. etc. This is probably the 100th time I've connected my device to my computer. My computer IS registered, both things have the same ID and password. I did what you said and transferred purchases. It made NO difference. Manually manage music...is already clicked. If I click it again, I get the same message as before that I will lose everything! I STILL cannot drag and drop. However, I saw where it said something about "You must first import audio CDs into iTunes before you can add them to your device" Do they mean the ACTUAL CD? Because I do NOT have those available! Only the files on my computer. I don't even know how the music got into my iTunes library in the first place. I did not do it deliberately. I would think it wouldn't have imported incompatible files, but maybe not. I love my iPad but I am disgusted with iTunes. It is NOT user friendly in the least!

No - not the actual CD. The imported files have to be in iTunes. I'm sure that you did that correctly.

Sorry, I just assumed that you had never synced before. So obviously, this is a brand new problem with iTunes? I'm trying to think of what could possibly be causing this incompatibility.

You said that you've connected the iPad "100 times" in the past. Were you able to sync all of those previous times? Can you think of anything that you did on the iPad or in iTunes that coincided with this problem that has developed?

If you have been syncing and this problem just cropped up, I am mystified as to what may have caused it.

Okay. Don't know why iTunes imported my music from my computer in the wrong format, but that is obviously what it did! I just deleted one of the albums that I am wanting to add to my iPad. After I deleted it and found it on my computer, I added it. I got a message about the format being wrong (can't remember exact wording) and that it would convert. I clicked okay and waited for the 12 songs to get into iTunes. I then selected all of them, and tried dragging and dropping again and this time it worked! Unfortunately, there is no album art. I'm a bit wary of trying to get it in case it messes something up! So now, I think my original idea to delete all of the songs and albums that I have NOT purchased from iTunes and then just manually putting in the ones I do want on my iPad is the way to go. Thanks for your help. Hopefully my experience will help someone else. The "wiping out" problem is NOT a new one, as when I was trying to find an answer last week to transferring files, it came up as a common problem! I think it is a glitch in iTunes itself, perhaps with the latest version? People were complaining about it and it needing to be fixed.

Sorry I wasn't more help. I've never gotten that message in iTunes when I sync. But - I have gotten some other bizarre messages from iTunes since the update to iOS 5. Usually, I just quit iTunes and restart my Mac and the bizarre messages go away, sometimes it takes a little more work than that, but I've yet to be totally stumped with my own iPad. I guess I shouldn't say that - who knows what will crop up now!

Good luck. If anything else pops up, post back.

Thanks for trying. I went ahead and got the artwork, deleted it from the pad then tried dragging and dropping with the artwork and it wouldn't go! I closed iTunes, opened it again, and then it worked. I was able to convert some podcast movies to be compatible with the iPad when clicking on the advanced tab. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to do this with the music. I will just have to delete and then re-import. Maybe I can find some software that will convert my music files to the correct format in one swoop. If you come up with anything regarding this, I'd love to hear about it! Anyway, I hope these posts help someone else!

- il periodo in cui l'iTunes Match ha funzionato correttamente sull'iPad è durato solo qualche settimana;

- in seguito, anche se tutti i brani della Cloud venivano visualizzati sull'iPad, dava problemi nel senso che i brani non venivano riprodotti e, inoltre, la durata veniva indicata in "zero" per tutti i brani, sicchè, cliccandoci, non venivano riprodotti;

- ho provato a disattivare e riattivare l'iTunes Match e, a questo punto il dispositivo ha dato il messaggio "tutta la tua libreria musicale verrà sostituita con quella su iTunes Match", mentre, nell'applicazione "MUSICA" erano spariti tutti i brani: veniva visualizzata, al centro della pagina, la nuovoletta del Cloud, con una barra di download sotto. Questo è durato per circa quattro giorni, senza che succedesse nulla, nel senso che la barra del download non mostrava segni di caricamento;

- allora ho provato a ripristanare le impostazioni e, a questo punto, erano visualizzati di nuovo i brani, ma comunque senza possibilità di riprodurli (la durata di nuovo indicata come "zero");

- nel momento in cui ho provato a cliccare su uno dei brani, è riapparsa la nuvoletta del Cloud con la barra di download sotto;

- quando i brani ricompaiono, hanno sempre durata zero e non vengono riprodotti;

- ho attivato anche la condivisione in famiglia ma il problema non cambia.

Vi preciso che il mio iPad è della prima generazione ed è aggiornato all'IOS 6.
