10.0.3 DISASTEROUS

"montster" just wanted to let you know that i received all the gear finally today and WOW is that 2.5 GHz i7 MBP with 8 GHz ram awesome. the 27" tunderbolt display is WOW !!! it runs fcs3 like a honey and appears to be almost as fast if not as fast as my dual xeon quad core MP desktop that ima sell now. and i have to say that parellels has come a LONG way. i installed windows xp pro in it and after all the updates (wow windows) under parellels it starts up and shuts down faster than any pc i ever owned AND is actually fast up/down than lion. how about that. ive never seen windows run so fast as it does under parellels on a MBP 2.5 i7.

my wife and i were so excited we are going to get her a 13.3" AIR and sell off her 13.3" MBP. so in the next week or so we will sell a 13.3" MBP, a 15.4" MBP, and the dual xeon MP. anyone need some gear :-)

thanks for the input on the speed and soundness of that machine "montster" i really appreciate the input. obtw, will prob download the free trial of fcpx and put a heavy HD project in it and see how it performs. but not till i get all the apps from both machines (former MBP and MP) into the new MBP.

Hey for all those with SLOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW DOWN issues i suggest you try something. i just did on my older MBP from a thread in here about problems with Safari locking up and concluding it was related to flash and a user posted this message for help with Safari and Yahoo mail . . .

- - Go to System Preference > Flash > Select "Delete All" stored content.

I did this on my older computer and WOW did it speed the machine up period !!! i mean everything on that puter was running slow and so i did the above and WOW everything quit locking up, not just safari but my dock quit jerking, my screens open twice as fast, and my internet just improved by like 50-100% speeds.

adobe must have a thing for selling higher speed processors (intel connected maybe?) since everything i have from them eats resources like termites on fresh cut dried timber. WOW what a change. wonder how often we have to do that?

for those of you with this slooooooooow down FCP X thing i would try it, won't hurt thats for sure.

just FYI....YOU GUYS SHOULD READ THIS....

also of particualar interest please note that they do not edit on macbook pro's but in fact macpro's with hearty systems no doubt (quad core and sextet cores) so i think the real ticker conclusion suggested here with fcp x is that it is NOT a heavy duty mobile device software but a hard core machine tool ??

Adobe are still offering 50% discount to those switching from FCP to CS5.5. All my 3rd party stuff works with Adobe so fortunately I didn't lose out too much when Apple handed us FCPX and dropped FCP7.

Adobe also will permit multi-license for Mac and Windows for those still wanting to stay on the OSX side ... but without a "verifiable" future for the "hard core machine tool" aka a MacPro (Apple didn't even ask for Engineering samples of the latest Intel XEON processors) you might want to transition to Windows completely (sad reality) as you have much wider scope of hardware as it becomes available rather than waiting 2+ years for Apple to "maybe" update their MacPro line.

I'm using almost the exact same computer set-up as you running FCP X 10.0.3 with a 7200 Graid mini through firewire and could barely get through a fairly complex 5 min project with all the lagging and sync issues. All media + the project file was on the HD. I have ingested my Canon 5D footage the same way, optimized and proxy, and edited and built in proxy mode. I tried turning off waveforms and closing all other programs. I ran Activity Monitor. I finally got a piece done after MUCH hassle with my creativity quite compromised, and went to upload last night and the exports at different sizes/formats (iPhone, Mac & PC, Media export) often but not always gave me black titles and incomplete/green render segments even tho they were connected and rendered in the timeline. I finally got one done in the wee hours and now I have reinstalled FCP 7 on my machine but am considering diving into Adobe Premier Pro with After Efx.

The only thing different with my set up is that I have 4GB ram... wondering if I should try going up to 8GB or from other posts it sounds like even 16GB on machines that can take it are having problems - any thoughts?

Almost pointless to Run raid through firewire, use the esata port to sonnet thuderbolt/esata adapter or if you have it the express slot with the sonnet pro adapter card for esata. Esata is 3-5 x as fast as firewire 800.

4GB RAM is the bare minimum, pretty much only good for just opening FCP X and that's it, Try and get 16gb, OWC sells 8GB sticks for 2011 macbook pro's. I assume your using a current macbook pro.

@ "pagecrew" i am running a two hour project on my new macbook pro 2.5ghz i7 with 8gb ram of which about 40 minutes is multicam, a reasonable amount of titling, and slow mo, and color correction and it is running fine under fcp7. from the horror stories i would suggest as you asked "Need to start my next project (paid with deadlines) in SOMETHING." perhaps fcp 7 would be the right move?

@ "wildgiles" can one put 16gb in the newer macbook pro 2.5ghz i7 machines? if so, i'd love to take a shot at that. i love having lots of mem sitting around waiting to do something.

PEGASUS DRIVE - - i wonder has anyone tried this 10.0.3 with the newer thunderbolt 4gb raid external drive? i would love to hear how that is working as i am wondering if the color wheel syndrome is related to drive wire through put.

Yes you can put 16GB Ram in the 2011 macbook pro's, check out the OWC site.

Thunderbolt is difinitely the way to go for imac's and macbook pro's, up to 10x the speed of firewire 800. 10gbs vs 0.8gbs

really? when i ordered this new machine last week through apple leasing they said that 8gb was the max it would take :-( what the ??

i would like to hear how someone using the PAGUSAS drives and this 10.0.3 issue are making out. all that everyone is saying sounds like a back up somewhere and i just have a heard time believing that it is processor related IF '02 worked and if so, id pop for the extra thunderbolt drives to get FCP X
