Hi,
I have just updated my Yahoo email on the internet. Mail on my Mac was working fine, I am still receiving mails but seem to have a problem with sending mails. The little cog wheel keeps going round and round but the message does not get sent. I am able to send and receive on my ipad.

Are you sure the sendmail settings on the iPad are the same as they are on the Mac? Sendmail uses SMTP on Mac OS X Mail unless you are using an Exchange server. The company providing the internet juice may block sendmail using a different server unless you password authenticate your Mail over a particular port. Usually that port is 587, 2626, or 2662. And when you password authenticate the username is usually your full e-mail address.
Apple has an article that addresses that, you can find it by clicking Mail Can receive email, but not send email .
