Hi everyone,

i've a problem with my mp3 tags, i'm trying to organize my library trough updating the ID3 tags but it won't work.

For example, I've 2 artists: ACDC and AC/DC, when I change the info artist into ACDC, it won't change anything and i'll still have both names aperaing.

Worse, on some compilation, in my iphone, the album nam will appear as many times as there is songs... if I've 20 songs in an album called "Compilation 1" for example, the album "Compilation 1" will appear 20 times in my iphone list...

any idea?

thanks

How are you changing the tags?

Ideally this should be done in the Info box on iTunes on your computer.

(I do not believe there is anyway to change tags on your iPhone.) and changing certain tags in Windows explorer can sometimes lead to conflicts/confusion.

If you're doing it via iTunes and the tags aren't changing -- you need to check that you have write permisssions for the files themselves and the enclosing folder(s) - that they are not some how locked.

If all is ok permissions wise: my guess is that your iTunes Library files) have somehow corrupted.

You really should look at this support document:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

Tho it describes other reasons for recreating these files -- it's possible recreating those files will work for you.

Lastly, uninstall/reinstall iTunes (you need to do more than just delete the iTunes App)

See topic "Completely remove iTunes..." on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926

All above presupposes that your problems are not virus related, and that the music files themselves are not corrupt (you didn't say if this was happening with all of you music - but i sounded that way.)

However, they are not on my computer's hard drive but on an ethernet connected external drive, do you think it could be the problem ?

seems very likely to me. - but I've never tried that. That's worth a seperate topic here, perhaps someone who's used one could reply, Barring that, See below (for a way to test)

I've already tried some of your , my last chance will be to reinstal iTunes, however, will all of my library be lost (i mean, will i have to re-upload all the songs ?, i've over 8000 songs so it's pretty long).

No removing the program won't do anything to your music.  After you reinstall itunes first try copying a few songs to default location on your internal HD,  and see if problem still exists (make sure iTunes is pointed to it) THEN reestablish the external,

PS: I forgot to ask Does your iTunes Prefs > Advanced Tab show the correct path to your media folder? Do you have the "Copy files to Media Folder when adding... "  checked?

Warning: I don't know about iTunes Match: but I would definitely turn off all Automatic updating (everywhere iTunes, iPhone etc ) while you're messing with this.

Take a look at my article on Grouping tracks into albums.

I suggest you standardize AC/DC as AC-DC (Windows Media Player treats AC/DC as two separate bands, or at least it used to). You will need to change all occurrences of AC/DC, ACDC, AC_DC etc as Album, Album Artist, Artist & Composer, and in some cases shut down and restart iTunes, to make the unwanted values disappear from the column browser.

If the unwanted values persist after editing then I would suspect an issue with multiple tags. This can usually be addressed using the right-click menu Convert ID3 Tags > None several times followed by Convert ID3 Tags > V2.3. All tag information should be preserved with the exception of Album Art which you will need to reacquire. Before you start, check using Get Info with a single file that the values should, in principle, be editable by you. If the fields are all grayed out then either the files are locked as Read-Only or your account doesn't have permission to make changes.

Give your compilation albums a common album artist, e.g. Various Artists.

I have been downloading music from the website datpiff.com when I down load the albulms and put them in my iPhone the artist names do not register. The artist appear in my iTunes on my computer just not on my phone. Is ther any way to stop this.

Hi doff your almost in the right place. Ideally you should start a new discussion within https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_windows

    Anyway it's possible there's a simple solution.

In iTunes list view check to make sure you can see both the Artist and Album Artist" fields. ( i think control-J)

Alternately, do a "get info" It's possible the site you downloaded from only included the "Album Artist" field (in which case you'd copy/paste into the Artist field.

If that's not the case, try right clicking a song and choose covert ID3 tags (choose 2.3 I've had strange results with v2.4). Do this on a copy of the song in case something goes blooey.

If that doesn't work, you should start a new discussion maybe someone else has a better idea.

    Good luck

I had this problem and all i did was delete the album in itunes, go to the original download and edited the track numbers as they were numbered 101, 102, 103... etc. I just deleted the '1's' so they were 01, 02, 03...etc.

then put it back into itunes and I could then edit names and pic.
