Windows 7 degrades to unuseable

I have 2 MPB laptops, (mine and my sons) both with SSD's that are bootcamped with Windows 7 Pro 64bit and are currently running SL 10.6.8. On both laptops, the windows partition ran fine initially. Now over the course of about 6 months the windows partitions have degraded significantly. Explorer takes forever to open up a file browser. If you right click in the browser they grind for 15 - 20 seconds before the right-click menu appears. On my laptop, when I open up Maya the window becomes so sluggish that it is unuseable.

I don't know if this due to some Windows 7 update, or the video driver or what is going on. I open up the process monitor and nothing seems to be running amok. I ran HDTune on my MPB and it does not indicate any problems with the windows partition. On the Mac side everything is zippy as always. For other reasons, I am going to rebuild the Windows 7 partition but I would like to know if others are seeing this issue and if so, if they have found a cause as I would like to NOT have to rebuild my partition every 6 months.

Don't treat an SSD as you would a hard drive.

You may need to have more free space.

There have been issues with some SSDs, some MacBooks using SSDs.

Firmware updates for 3rd party SSDs have been a part of life.

Restoring an SSD can sometimes be required.

Keep the free space higher than you would.

Run Disk Cleanup and CCleaner 3.x

I would google "HDTune" before using, it could even cause trouble if it is not SSD-aware and safe.

I don't rebuild per se but I have been running Windows on an SSD 120GB with 50GB in use.

Cloning and restore might -

Apple used different brands in the past for their SSD. Some really had very low write I/Os.

It is not normal to "have to rebuild my partition every 6 months."

Are you running low on partition size due to loading additional programs or data?

How much RAM do you have?

Are you running up-to-date antivirus software?

Are you current on your Windows updates?

I've been running Windows 7 64 bit for more than two years without any slowdown. But I am not using a SSD.

HDTune is not a performance enhancing program it is a diagnostic program. (Actually the one that most places like Tom's Hardware and others use to measure HD performance) I run it to check things and then it is off. It does nothing to your HD other than doing diagnostic performance measurements. My laptop is a late 2011 MPB with a 2.7Ghz i7, 500Gb Apple SSD, 16Gb Ram. There is plenty of free space (> 35Gb free) on both my MBP and my sons. My son's MBP is a mid 2010 2.4Gz, 128Gb MacSales SSD (purchased and installed only 4 months ago), 8Gb Ram. I was aware of some hibernation issues with the firmware of OWC SSD drives but that was solved back in Feb of 2011 so that should not be an issue. We both run Norton AV on the windows side. Below are two snapshots of a read access benchmark. The first was on the original install in Oct of 2011 and the second I ran on 1/30/12.

There is no real decernable difference between the two. The two graphs look a bit different but that is because the scale on the right side of the access time is different.

One thing I can possibly think of that we both do/use that other people may not use is we both do development and we use TortiseSVN on the windows side as we use SubVersion for configuration management of our data files. I've checked and I've not see any reporting of issues with Tortise but that may not mean that there is not any. We both regularly apply all Microsoft updates. We are running all certified software, no cracks, no warz. These are both work machines so neither of us surf the web other than to visit a common set of websites dedicated to the software we both use. Again, I understand malware can be anywhere, but just to explain, we don't spend our time visiting naferious web sites.

I have a Windows 7 desktop as my main workstation. It has a Crucial M4 500Gb SSD running the same version of OS as is on my MBP. I use it daily and I've never had an issue with speed. I am running TortiseSVN on my desktop too. Given that my MBP is essentially a clone of my desktop and I see no issues with my desktop but I do see issues with my MBP I am inclined to think it could be a driver issue with bootcamp.

I mentioned I am rebuilding both machines this weekend. Both machines will be upgraded from SL 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.3 which will be a different version of bootcamp. Maybe that will fix my issue.

Previously I used WinClone but I do not believe that is available for Lion. I had a copy that did work with Leopard but I suspect that I'm SOL as far as Lion goes. Is there something new out there for Windows partitions that I can create a build image so that recreating my initial build is not such a PITA? Does Norton Ghost work well for bootcamp drives or are there issues? Given that both my workstation setup as well as my son's takes about 2 days for each image to get everything working the way we both like it, the cost of an app to make me a clean build image is peanuts compared to my time..... but I don't want to spend money on some POS software that is not going to do the job right.

some bench programs adversely affect an ssd, corsair recommended atto

I would avoid norton and use MSSE

for cloning' Paragon, both CampTune and Clone OS (perfect for a Windows only drives)

Apple went thru a lot of revisions to 2011 Macbookpro line, to SATA3/6G

Sounds though you already did your homework

thoyght you wanted to avoid a reinstall

for 2011s, surprised you have SL and not BC 4.x

you couldhave an issue with Apple and SATA3

Hmm, reading the article on macperformance, I'm not sure what you are refering to. I'm running Bootcamp 3.3 as that is what SL installs and on the Mac and Windows side it does not indicate that a 4.x version is available. (Running update on Mac or Win side shows everything is up to date). As I said, my 500Gb drive is Apple so according to the article I should not have issues all be it not the fastest SSD available. I purchased this in Oct of 2011 so hopefully (maybe) some of the 6g/3g connector issues or performace issues are not there. We shall see as in the upgrade I mentioned I'm getting one of the OWC adapter kits and I'm putting in a segate 750Gb hybrid drive for data. That is a sataIII drive so I'll have to see what I get. I've not heard of any issues with bench programs and SSD's, but I know Robin Harris (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/storage) and I'll see what he has to say.

Thanks for the tip on Paragon. I use their drivers for both HFS for windows and NTFS for mac and the both work great. Looks like both their CampTune and Clone OS is what I am looking for. If I keep a snapshot around of clean working installs around I can both fix the issue fast if it occurs again and possible narrow down the exact issue that is causing the problem. Crap like this drives me nuts as I don't have time for this stuff. I have work to do and I hate putting on the IT hat when there is more important things to do. Joy's of freelancing.....

Anyway, thanks for the tips and the input. If I find a difinitive answer to this I'll post it and hopefully save someone else some trouble.

Lion and esp. Boot Camp 4.01+ better supports the newer model Macs with Sandy Bridge and TB and the rest, while 3.3 even is based on 2009.

No there is no auto update but you can install Lion on another drive and from there open Boot Camp Assistant and download the latest 4.x drivers to install in Windows. And those are what I would use. I thought by August any new Mac would come pre installed 10.7.1.

There were issues with Crucial and Intel and both had to issue firmware updates around June.

All 5 of my SSDs are from Corsair SATA2 Dec 2010 with their 2.0 firmware.

SATA 3.1 will offer TRIM, BCG all rolled into the specification for how native command queueing is handled which promises to be a significant improvement.

Had one, two at most, threads with questions about one of the SSD hybrid drives.

Feb 2, 2012 9:43 AM in response to The hatter

I got my MBP about 1 week before Lion was officially shipping. I did not want Lion at the time because there are a number of applications I use that I knew would not work with Lion (Maya for one). The dust has now settled a bit and for other reasons I need to have Lion and the applications that I require to work with Lion now, for the most part, work ok.

Perhaps all of my issues are simply that. It would be nice.

The M4 Crucial drive in my workstation has the latest update and has worked fine. Amazing fast compared to my old drive, which was a velociraptor and no slouch at that, but it did not come close to what an SSD can do.
