Q: after Security update 2012-001 cannot save any Office 2004 file

UPDATE: no crashes, but did see loss of keyboard shortcuts and inability to Save As. See https://discussions.apple.com/message/17478269#17478269 for details.

I have the same very frustraiting problem. Daniel - thank you for the work-around -but curious if anyone has heard an official statmement from Apple regarding their official fix to the problem.

I refuse to buy a new version of Office that doenst run under Rosetta etc, especially after now burning $500 in lost time on this new Apple-created problem.

This is not the quality we expect from Apple.

Proper testing before software is released is part of the cost of developing software, if  you cannot test it, you should not be releasing it.

I have a Time Capsule, but unfortunately I do not back up my entire system--only document files. I have my application software, and my OS discs are somewhere. . . .

But I hate to reinstall the OS and go through all of that because of some alpha-hotel's carelessness in releasing an update that they SHOULD'VE KNOWN would cause this kind of chaos.

I hope there are heads rolling out the door for this.

I have exactly the same problem as described by everyone previously.  I depend on Office 2004 for my work.  2008 & 2011 are awful and it I see no reason to upgrade.  Anyone else thinking this is Apple's way of forcing all of us to abadon our Rosetta programs once and for all?

Yes - it is like going to your car mechanic to, say, - change your oil, and by-the-way, your steering doesn't work afterward- but hey, your oil is better... grrrrr

Too bad no viable backups. I was back up and running within six minutes. Five minutes to restore my clone and one minute for two restarts.

Thanks for the advice. I reinstalled and my Word 2004 is working fine again. Have not tried my other "old" apps.

I had the same problem as everyone else. Office 2004 would not save documents after security update. Fortunately I had a 2 day old "Super Duper" clone, but it took me the whole morning to figure out that the problem originated with Apple and not a corrupted HD or application.

The moral: ALWAYS do a clone backup before doing anything that modifies the operating system. Time Machine is not an adequate answer.

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.

If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.

If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6

Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.

Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)

When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.

If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

this link has a fix that was developed for all...my microsoft office 2004 couldn't save..went through it all with microsoft...realized it was this apple update...my word is working again like normal took two seconds just download and install this zip file.  Couldn't believe it I'm in the middle of two novels!

Found it has to do with rosetta not working with this update so this addresses that...I found it on another discussion on the apple boards!  Just had a couple of bad hours freaking out.

Here's another problem with 2012-001: when I install Adobe Acrobat 7.0 into OSX 10.6.8 it works okay, but when I try and install the Acrobat 7.0.5 update I receive a message after about 30 seconds:

"AUM client quit unexpectedly."

YW I think everyone should pass it on this is completely disastrous...think of the millions who don't use apple discussion boards?  Apple should have a fix on this out immediately it's a disaster.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. The first thing I did after discovering the issue was restore Rosetta, but that didn't do the trick. What did was restoring my current clone.
