Macintouch is reporting that the recent security update for Snow Leopard is preventing printing from PPC applications such as Quicken snd AppleWorks, and in some cases is preventing them running at all.

Strange error: Print Command does not work in PPC programs (Eudora), but Print One Copy works fine. No trouble printing with Intel or Universal Applications. Console shows the following messages:

Eudora [767]NSDocumentController Info.plist warning: The values of CFBundleTypeRole entries must be ‘Editor’, ‘Viewer’, ‘None’, or ‘Shell’.

[0x0-0x3a03a]/com.qualcommm.eudora [767] Th Feb 2 20:54:57 MacPro.local Eudora [767] <Error>: tiff data provider: Not a TIFF file, bad version number 10752 (0x2a00).

Bug report sent to Apple.

Latest Security Update is causing headache for PPC programs in 10.6 Rosetta

Restore

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.

If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.

If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions, (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 from the disk.

Note: This 10.6 reinstall does not touch your files and most programs (provided you don't erase), but backup your files regardless.

Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.

Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)

When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.

If you get gray screen, hold the shift key while booting and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Note: If any of this is beyond your ability, no problem, I'm no brain surgeon neither, call in a professional before you lose your data.

What "ds store" said !

I just did this, it took me about an hour and 10 minutes, and everything works as before.

1- Back up with Time Machine (just in case)

2- Install SL from the original install disc

3- Run the 10.6.8 Combo Update

4- Run software update, and update everything except the security update.

Just be sure not to run the security update !

Now...

... begin rant...

Shame on you Apple, I just wasted an hour with this on my machine. Then after hearing of the CUI problems with the Lion update I decided to download the 1Gig combo update to run on my wifes Macbook. Another hour wasted, as 2 attempts to download the combo update both resulted in corrupt disk images.

What the **** is going on there ? I really didn't want to believe the folks who said "without Steve at the helm Apple won't be the same", but c'mon... these are the first OS updates since he's been gone, right ?

... end rant.
