why wont my iphone play sound

My iPhone can make a receive calls and the sound is fine (ie: talking, hearing and ringing) but there is no sound (with or without earphones) when I try to play music or aps (particularly the white noise ap I am extremely reliant on with a new baby!).

The volume settings appear in order and the volume is not muted.

Any ideas welcome.
