Does iMessage work over 3G?

I believe iMessage works only on wi-fi between iOS5 devices, with both sides needing to be on a wi-fi network. Recently, I have sent and received texts when I know I have not been on wi-fi, but on my 3g Verizon network. The other side may or may not have been on wi-fi. The thing is: Both the sent and recieved messages show the blue color theme vs. the green as for regular texts.

Does iMessage REQUIRE 2-way wi-fi?

Are there situiations where iMessage will work over the cellular network?

If wi-fi IS rquired, why do I see the blue balloons?

iMessage will work over the Cellular Network if a WiFi signal is not available.

Thanks. But I assume the message is then simply treated as a "regular" text and charged against whatever message plan one has with their carrier. And in that case it's really not an "iMessage" as described by Apple. Right? And if that's right, why are the "balloons" blue?
