iPhone mail not automatically checking for mail

I just got my iPhone 4 yesterday and I'm a pretty tech savvy teenager. However, my mail isn't automatically checking for new mail. I want it to alert me whenver I get a new email, but it will only check for new mail when I physically open the mail app. I've searched everywhere in the settings and can't find anything to change that would automatically check for new mail. Maybe I'm just overlooking something? Could someone please help me figure this out?

Thanks!

Mine used to update no problem on all previous iPhones and my current 7 and iPad but suddenly decided not to work. Now updates eventually but have had to install other email apps to ensure I get all my mail now. Seems to like only my hotmail account. Would love to get it working properly again. Can some one tell me what has gone wrong becasue I can't get my iCloud email any more

I know it is a bit late but here the solution I found.

1. in settings go to email, contacts, calendar.

2. choose "fetch Data" and here you are able to turn push on and off.

3. Underneath you can select how often you want the iphone to get mails automatically

4. at the bottom it says "advanced" - here you can set the options for each account whether they should get mails or be pushed.

I am sure you already have figured out how to do it, but this answer might be helpful to future searchers.
