iPod classic skipping

Haven't been following for a while. Too busy with iPad issues. Has any thing new come op random skips in middle of songs to next track? Or should I give into my desire to see how high it will bounce when tossed from my condo balcony?

Have already tried resets, deleting songs, etc. no need to rehash issues already posted in other threads.

The usual reason I've seen for this is a disk that is starting to fail. Take a look at my collected iPod information post (where I keep track of interesting posts and stuff). In there you'll find a reference on how to do disk diagnostics. Run those and see if they are indicative of a failing hard disk.

I have no idea how to close and mirror threads -- I'm just an iPod user, like you. I've been following this discussion group because I've been wary of iTunes 10.5, and have learned a lot.

I took a look at the thread you indicated. I tend to use Occam's razor on these things: the simplest answer is often the correct one. If there was a major design flaw, Apple wouldn't have sold so many classics. Therefore, whatever this problem is, it is likely at the noise level in terms of overall sales (like, say, the Toyota acceleration problems :-)). That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, mind you.

Now, I will share one idea that occurred to me. I'm a stickler for getting songs to play right on my iPod. I've had a few times where a song would act up, yet play perfectly find in iTunes. When that happened, I hypothesized that the problem was the codec (decoder) used on the iPod. Often I've been able to take the song and convert it to mp3 or aac (i.e., the opposite of what it was), redownload it to the iPod, and it plays fine. So my theory might be that there's something common in this music that is triggering a bug in the iPod classic software. This likely wouldn't show up on the iOS devices, because they are running different software. Will Apple fix it? I doubt it--I don't think we're going to see any updates to the Classic software... the classic line will limp along until they get a large storage iOS device.

That's about all I can suggest. I, too, don't want my Classic to fail. I have nearly 28,000 songs on it.

The temporary fix for skipping songs is to do a iPod Reset

Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs, till the Apple logo comes ON. then release the buttons

Select your prefered language.

But sometimes this doesn't work as the skipping comes back, when your cache is full.

The new Classic firmware 1.1 or later, has issues with playing Joint Stereo encoded files.

You can verify that your problem files are encoded as Joint Stereo by looking at the properties or Get Info on the problem songs.

Most people just use 3rd party app, MP3 validator, to correct the problem, but if you are using AAC, re-convert them as regular Stereo. use iTunes converter AAC->MP3->AAC.

Good luck!

I was having the exact same issue, and after browsing through Google and these forums, I found the answer. Download mp3Validator, and run it on your entire library. It looks like hte iPod classic's firmware is really picky specifically about MPEG file headers, and refuses to play songs with problems there. iTunes and other iPods will play the songs just fine, but for some reason the classic won't. If you run mp3Validator on them, it will catch these problems and fix them. I've been having this problem for about 6 months now, and 5 minutes with this program completely fixed it.

I could see perhaps this would affect mp3's I downloaded, but would it also affect mp3's created by itunes from original CD? Also would problem randomly appear/disappear if bad mp3?

In any even mp3validator worth a shot. Any suggestion on where to download from? Google shows MANY download sites, concerned about viruses. Thanks!

I’ve come to believe it has something to do w/ the headphone jack, or at least for me. My iPod will skip forward or pause randomly. At first I assumed it was software related. But I also noticed my iPod would randomly come on in my pocket while locked. So then I thought maybe hold button. But after leaving the iPod to play w/out headphones it didn’t seem to skip. Isolating it to headphone (in MY case at least). If I twist or nudge the headphone connection I can cause it to pause and occasionally skip forward. I’m assuming the problem is the jack. There are headphones that have skip forward, back, and pause functionalities so maybe the connections that do this are gunked, corroded, or fouled up.

Seems easy enough and only cost $10. I’m also mechanically inclined so that helps as well. My iPod is two years old so I’m on my own. I either fix it or buy a new iPod.

Keep you guys posted after the repair.
