Hi everyone. I inherited a mid-2010 MacPro at work and am unable to access single user mode. I have booted off of an external HDD and reinstalled the OS. I have also reconfigured the RAM and reset the PRAM with no changes. When I load single user mode, I see the following prompt:

The only way for me to get out of "key:" is to reboot the computer. Any guidance you can provide is appreciated.

Some kind of third-party software has been installed that prevents booting in single-user mode.
It wouldn't be software that was sanctioned by IT as I'm part of the IT group and no one knows why I wouldn't have access to this. Any idea what software it could be?
None whatsoever. If you don't know how to log in, you'll most likely have to erase the drive.
I did a variation of what was linked above.
I was unable to modify var/root/.profile after using sudo or su -.
What I ended up doing was logging in to my root account, showing all hidden files, and manually deleated:
