mac mail 4.5 and smtp.mail.yahoo.com

What is the problem with mac mail (current version 4.5). Had the same problem with previous version. I use smtp.mail. yahoo.com as my outgoing server. OUt of the clear blue outgoing mail stops working. It has worked for days (weeks) at a time. Then with me not changing a thing it all of sudden stops working. For example I sent email this morning, came back and haven't been able to send email since 1PM today. All I get the spinning wheel. In mail connection doctor same thing. I have 2 other mail programs using the same exact servers and THEY WORK FINE. So what is wrong with mac mail. It is just terrible to use a os and can't use the mail service with reliability. Had the SAME exact problem with my older mac and the previous mail app. I switched from a g5 running leopard to a mac pro running snow leopard and have the same issues

Anyone else going through this and find any solutions?

thanks.

BDA,

No. This was a brand new computer and the only thing I brought over was the old email files which are put into a separate folder. The mail program however was started from scratch, and this was a new install. What was interesting was that I was having the same promblems on a different older computer, with an older version of mac mail. Funny thing is that it's working today, though a bit slow, and I didn't change a thing. It is just one of those things that crops ups from time to time with no explanation. When it does fart out, my other mail programs still work fine.

While observing the connection doctor I could see that it was connecting, then discconecting, and connecting again, in like an endless loop. So when it is trying to send mail I don't even get a message saying it can't connect it just goes on and on with the spinning "im working on thing" as opposed to the color wheel of death. And that will get stuck like that until I delete the outgoing message and quit mac mail and restart. I'm still of the opinion that it has something to do with some kind of handshake problem between mac mail and the yahoo server.

thanks

OK, different IMAP servers can have different requirements, in Mail Preferences>Accounts>That Account>Mailbox behavior tab & advanced tab...

Some don't like Junk or Deleted stored on the server, some need the Idle command toggled one way or the other.

I don't have Yahoo or AT&T, but Mail works pretty good with gMail IMAP & others, as well as several POP accounts in 10.4.11, 10.5.8, 10.6.x, 10.7.x.
