My friend wants a device to use to write a diary and to write letters. Do iPads work without an internet connection? My friend will not be able to connect to the internet where they live. thank you.

How about a netbook? Not apple, I'm afraid, but you can get a good netbook for 300ish. Add to that Open Office, a fully functional and free word processing program, and they have something small and light, with a full sized keyboard for a little more than half the entry level iPad.

I have a netbook and love it. Great for travel. I have a Toshiba model that has about 6 hours of battery life.

One other thing to consider for the iPad is to type well and easily, your friend will probably want an external keyboard, so by the time you get that, a cover/case of a sort etc you'll easily add 1-200 more in cost.

My friend has pens and paper, now they want a computer. I am trying to find cheaper options for them.

I am related to my friend, by the way, and they are insisting that I look into this for them, and because I love them very much, I want to help them.

I have no idea how an iPad works - so I am seeing if that is a possible option.

Otherwise - my friend will be purchasing a $1200 plus computer that they will most likely use just for the word processing program.

I appreciate any and all advice that is available. Thank you.

Does your friend want to type a diary or handwrite one? The advantage to the iPad is you can do both. I like my iPad for handwriting notes (look at apps like Noteshelf and PenUltimate) with a stylus. Even if your friend can't access the internet at their home, there are generally places that offer free WiFi (McDonalds, Starbucks, local libraries).

I disagree that an iPad is "overkill". If you're friend has the discretionary money and likes the iPad better than a netbook (I certainly do) then I don't think it's a bad choice. If, on the other hand, spending less money is a consideration, a netbook is a option.

Best of luck.
