nike+ data not syncing to website

I just got my nano (6th generation) repaired, as it had water damage before. I've never used nike+ and today was my first day. I ran and recorded my workout and it successfully downloaded onto my computer. My itunes is set up so that it will automatically sync with nike+ website, however the information is not being sent.

I've restarted my computer, but not sure on what end lies the problem. Can someone please help advise?

Getting iTunes to sync with Nike+ the very first time can be tricky. You need to make sure that you have a Nike+ ID set-up already. Not sure if it makes a difference, but what I do is I close/shutdown all apps except iTunes. Then I connect my nano to iTunes and it'll start the sync process. At some point, iTunes will pop up a dialog window asking if you want to connect to Nike+. Click yes and your browser will open to the Nike+ webpage. Login using your Nike+ account credentials. Hopefully, at this point you will see your workouts on the website.

If all has gone as planned, you'll see that iTunes has gotten your Nike+ credentials set-up properly. If you connect your nano, click the Nike+ iPod tab. You'll see a drop down field that shows all of your "sensors". If you don't have the Nike+ kit, you'll just have two sensors ... Sensor1 and Pedometer. If your Nike+ is set-up properly, you'll see your email address on the screen. If not, then you'll need to do the process over.

Note - the credentials are actually saved on the iPod, not in iTunes. If you set the nano to enable disk use, you can root around in the file structure and view the files. Workouts are stored on xml files and can be moved from the Synced folder to the Latest folder in order to resync workouts that didn't make it to the website.

Hi Franklin,

I'm new here. I am having this problem too. However, what happens when I tell it yes I want to visit Nike+, what opens up is a Word document, not the Nike+ website. I can't figure out why this is happening. Even if I'm logged into Nike+ on a different tab, it's still not happening. I've got everything updated, all current. Any ideas what is causing this?

Thank you.

Jennifer

Frank, I have tried all of these steps multiple times to no avail. Where exactly should the drop-down list of sensors show up? I don't have any external sensors - just the built-in pedometer. And I see no menu and, while itunes says it is syncing, nothing ever shows up at the nike site. any idea what file on my ipod stores the nike id information? i called apple support and they are completely worthless - don't have a clue how it is supposed to work or how to help fix it.

Joe,

Are you trying to upload running workouts to Nike+, or just your walking steps? It used to be that your walking steps would upload to the Nike+ Active website, but they shut that down almost 2 years ago. Running workouts would upload to Nike+ Running. For a short while, the Nike+ Running website would accept the walking steps, but no longer. I've given up tracking my walking steps via Nike.

As for the file that stores your Nike id info ... read on. You're running on a Mac, right? If you're using a PC, it's a little easier. Just drill down to the same folder as described below ... you may have to "enable invisible folders/files" or something like that.

1. Connect your iPod to your Mac.

2. Go to the Finder and hit Shift-Command-G

3. Type in /volumes/*****/ipod_control/device/trainer/workouts/empeds , where ***** is the name of your ipod

4. You'll be taken to the empeds folder where you'll see a folder for nikeinternal and pedometer. nikeinternal is for your running workouts while pedometer is for your walking steps.

5. Your Nike+ credentials are stored in the settings.plist file. It's a text file, so you can open it in TextEdit (or Notepad for Windows users).

Hope this helps

Franklin, you are a genious ... a real one, not a fake one like those folks at Apple tech support! 😉 You nailed it - all of my workouts were walks; when I did a run it uploaded to Nike w/out any problems. You'd have thought somebody at Nike or Apple would know about that and ask that question. Oh, well.

I also see the bar w/the two "sensors", Sensor1 and Pedometer, just like you said. However, I don't see my Nike+ email address and it's not in the settings.plist files. I am guessing this is because I was already logged in to Nike+, so iTunes couldn't grab my email out of the logon screen. Does this even matter?

Thanks again for helping me solve this mystery - it was seriously bugging me, I'm really happy to have figured it out!

Glad I could help. It really bugs me that Apple and to some degree, Nike, still advertise the Nike+ walking features. It's a dead feature and Apple really should set up a separate website for folks to upload their steps.

I wouldn't worry about your email address showing up in the settings.plist file. As long as your iPod/iTunes/Nike+ are synced together, why worry.

I've learned a long time ago that Nike makes great stuff, but they make terrible websites. The Nike+ sites are no exception. The fact that it works, after the initial kinks, is a wonder. Don't mess with it, if it works.

As a test I logged out of Nike plus then uploaded a new workout. Now my email address shows up. Cool.

And agreed, they need to make it clear that walking isn't tracked. Would have saved me around 4 hours of fiddling and tech support calls! It would be nice if Apple put a little effort into tracking the walking. I would think a couple of engineers could come up w/something pretty spiffy in short order.

Now that you've solved this problem ... care to tell me why iTunes asks for my password every time I open it, even tho it opens on my music tab? Seems like it shouldn't need me to login when I'm just doing stuff locally. This is another problem Apple tech support wasn't able to solve. (BTW I'm on a windows 7 box, not Mac).

Hello all.

I too have been struggling with this annoying annoying issue. As a workaround, I found a website called "Fun+", where you can manually add your runs to the nike+ site. It doesn't give you anything like elevation, splits, or even that pace ("nikefuel") graph, but at least I've been able to add the last few weeks worth of runs & track some progress.

I'm going to post this on the numerous threads about iPod & nike+ connectivity.

Best, DS.
