After two visits to Apple repair specialists, the last of which resulted in the logic board being replaced, my iMac now takes 10 minutes (I timed it!) to boot up. Most of this time is spent with a plain light blue screen.

Could be - nothing lost in trying my suggestion. Select the Mac OSX 10.6.8 icon and click on restart. Hopefully it'll make a difference.

It may be best to just ignore it. You probably could delete it by using Disk Utility but you might run the risk of disturbing your HD and causing other problems.
