Compatible Optical Drives for G4 MDD?

I'm using an OEM Pioneer DVR-110D as a second drive in my MDD. The drive is a 16x DVD-R+R/RW Dual Layer burner. Price is approx. $40 at http://www.newegg.com I've kept both drives in my machine (original DVR-104). Toast 6 or 7 is a good app for advanced burning but is not needed.

If you are running 10.4.4 the drive is fully supported by the iApps. If you are running 10.3.9 then patchburn is required for iApp compatibility ( http://www.patchburn.de )

Is the Pioneer DVR S606 drive compatible?

It appears that this drive (DVR-S606) is an external USB drive. I would recommend a firewire external drive if you are looking for an external drive.

How difficult an install is the internal Pioneer?

I was at the Pioneer site and the page for the drive mentioned only USB 2.0 connection/drivers. Here's a site to look at.

When you get the drive you will need to remove the faceplate on the drive's tray. The drive tray "as is" will not fit through the opening on your MDD.

Could someone please explain how to remove the faceplate? I just got the pioneer from newegg.com and just realized it can't eject because it doesn't fit?

On the front face of the drive, you'll find a small hole which is used to manually eject the tray. Insert a straightened paper clip or something similar into the hole and push in to release the tray. With the tray exposed, turn the drive upside down. On the underside of the front face of the tray you'll see two plastic release clips. While holding the drive upside down, use your thumbs to push outward from the underside of the faceplate/bezel, popping it off of the tray. You might save the faceplate/bezel in case you want to later install the drive in a PC.

The link from my last post shows and explains this procedure clearly about midway through the video, if my homemade explanation was hard to understand.

If you pull out at the bottom of the faceplate then pull up, the plate will come up and off.
