Ipod classic 80gb , showing RED X error

Hi,

My IPOD classic is giving this error : X and showing apple support website link.

I read many threads online, none of them worked.

I tried disk mode, but it does not go to disk mode at all.

It just shows apple symbol and then RED CROSS, when I hold any button for long, I get this tick tick sound lik a clock for 10-15 secs.

Some1 please help. I took it apple store aso, warranty has expired and thy said i have to pay full amount to buy new one, I dont want to waste money.

was just hoping, If any1 can suggest new idea to make it work somehow.

Red X mean your iPod Hardisk has crashed, there is no software fix.

Do this at your own risk, of course!

If you are lucky, there is a temporary fix, as it will crash again, so, not much useful suggestion, only good for those who don't do iTunes library backup, and need to copy back the music from iPod to PC using 3rd Party software.

This normally done by desperate iPod Classic owners who don'

t want to go to Apple Store or 3rd Party Service vendors, to have it fix.

  1. Make sure you have recharge the batteries for at least 2 hours.
  2. Put a rubber mouse pad on a flat table.
  3. Hold your iPod vertically and slam the base on the rubber mat with some force a few times
  4. Reset your iPod -> Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON and release the buttons.

You may have to do it several times, as the problem is cause by the HD head stuck in retract position, and this impact may free the head or it may crash the head depending on your luck.

Good Luck!

I Tried that method also before,

I found that solution when i was googling about it, But no one had mentioned whether to hit vertically or horizontally.

I tried tapping it horizontally. I guess I tapped pretty hard, It made a wierd noise and now i cant hear the clicking noise also, but i get same error.

I guess i will have to replace it! Apple asked me to pay $200 for replacing!!

Else i will just sell it on ebay.

Thanks
