Feb 10, 2012 5:00 PM in response to 4phunby limtc,The problem is the ~ files for me never disappeared (ever since latest OS upgrade). They just sit there, even after I save a version or quit iBooks Author.

Step one
Use Force Close to cause Finder to refresh
Tilde still there?
Step two
Launch Disk Utiltiy to repair your hard drive.
Tilde still there?
Delete the file and Empty Trash

Step two: your harddisk appeared to be good. Yes tilde still there.
Step three: OK, I will trash them. Let you know whethere they reappeared.

Feb 28, 2012 1:49 AM in response to limtcby Armando Fox,I'm seeing this behavior as well with tilde files never disappearing. Does anyone understand what's actually going on and how to get rid of them?

Mar 6, 2012 5:48 PM in response to Armando Foxby Twister60,Same here, tilde problem is consistently producing multiple files with exponentially growing tides on the end. Definitely a versions thing but also a bug in the software, wish I could say its the only one but it will be a few iterations of updates before its a solid prgram, at which point the price tag will change from free to $$. That's how Mac software is developed and has been since early OS 9, with exception of iTunes. I think iPhoto was free for quite a while until it became bundled in iLife. Good news is the program can build a book as advertised despite the unclean version of software. I don't think iTunes was fully clean until version 2 or so.

Mar 6, 2012 6:50 PM in response to Twister60by limtc,Don't think it is version. Versions are stored in a hidden folder named .DocumentRevisions-V100 in the root folder. This seems to be a scratch file (or cache file) generated by iBooks Author but did not get hidden or deleted.
Don't think iBooks Author will ever be non-free. It's existence is to sell iBooks, just like iTunes is free is to sell music and media contents.

Mar 6, 2012 6:52 PM in response to Armando Foxby limtc,Right now I am just living with it, deleting those for books that I am not currently working on.
Removing the ~ file for the books you are working on will make opening that book slower - as iBooks Author seems to create a ~ file when you open the book.

My take has always been that the "tilde" file is the functional equivalent of the Pages' "Backup of..." file—only easier to locate since it is paired alphabetically with the currently saved, non-tilde version of your project.

Mar 7, 2012 4:19 AM in response to mlangerby Fabe,There are many correct answers on here and a little speculation.
The tildé ~ file is a backup file. It's visible. Its visibility causes confusion. Ignore it. - Fabe

Mar 7, 2012 7:00 AM in response to Fabeby limtc,You can't ignore if it takes up GB of spaces (mine did). Just keep deleting, especially on books which are not currently worked on.

Limtc - I am only describing a project currently being worked on. Disk space is another issue. - Fabe

Mar 12, 2012 2:06 AM in response to mlangerby LandLord,Hi,
I'm seeing exactly the same issue, but on top of the annoying extra file with a tilde (which I am having to constantly delete), iBooks Author is now taking a looong time to save (30 seconds plus).
Disk space will certainly become an issue for me as the project I'm currently working on is nearly 1GB and it is not even close to half done.
This issue was not present for me prior to updating to 10.7.3.
Waiting patiently for an update.

Mar 12, 2012 2:23 AM in response to LandLordby LandLord,To add, I have a strong feeling that the reason iBooks author is now taking a looong time to save it that it is creating a duplicate of my nearly 1GB book each time - very tedious!!!

Jul 25, 2012 12:58 AM in response to Jon Walkerby denke,That seems right. I recently noticed a similar issue with TextEdit files, and I made it stop:
- Preferences
- Open and Save
- When Saving a File:
= Delete the automatic backup file
Could this be what's going on with iBooks Author? (I don't have Lion, don't think I have iBooks Author.)
I believe that when the document is saved, the last previously saved version is renamed with a tilde at the end, and then the current version is saved. (This is different from the autosave file, which shows up in Finder with (Autosave) after the filename, but is then deleted when the document is saved explicitly.) There is only one "backup" file (with a tilde). Each time the document is saved, the previous version becomes the tilde/backup.
Because my files are small, I've decided not to delete the backups.
