Shielded Ethernet Cable

To eliminate interference from power cables in a new network setup, I need to use shielded cat 6 ethernet cable in a horizontal run of about 100 feet. But I have been told that the Mac (any Mac) may not support the integrity of the shield. Before I install the cable, I'd like to know if this is the case. Does anyone have experience with this, or know of a link that could help?

I have not been able to find anything anywhere addressing this issue, so any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I'm not sure that the Mac's ethernet port terminates the drain wire/shield from a shielded cat6 or cat 5/e.

I imagine one way around the issue is to terminate your run into a punchdown block or keystone connector in each room, and terminate the drain there, then run utp cat 6 patch cable to your computers.

Don't forget that you will need to terminate the drain and make sure the termination ground points are at the same potential, otherwise you will induce an unwanted current flow in the cabling.

I would suggest that if you have a real issue with a noisy environment, you consider running fiber through the noisy area, and terminate that with media converters.

Also remember that unless you are running for the entire 100 ft in parallel and close to the power wiring, you shouldn't have to much of a problem, even separation of a few feet should be sufficient for most applications.

Thanks, Tom. You confirmed the uncertainty of the Mac's ability to support the shielding. My understanding was that even if the horizontal cable was terminated in the wall (or patch panel), that the patch cable to the computer also had to be shielded. But even if that is not the case, the other requirements (e.g., ground points at same potential) were looking a bit daunting for my limited expertise. Unfortunately, the data cable would have to run for about 75 feet within a few inches of the electrical power cable, so I will look into the fiber possibility--and also see if I can somehow reroute the data cable.

I appreciate your help.
