How can I help OS to remember applications have been launched before?

All too frequently I launch a previously opened application and receive the notice: "You are opening the application “Application Name” for the first time. Are you sure you want to open this application?"

With some, it is almost every time. With others it is sporadic.

How can I fix the problem?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Kappy,

I know it is a security precaution designed in by Apple but it doesn't work right. I have had Filemaker Pro, version 10.0v1 installed since I did a fresh installation of Lion in late December. It has not changed and will not change. I had problems with it under Snow Leopard too. It more than others.

I expect to see it when I launch a new version of an application but not the thrid or fourth or more times.

The security measure is screwed up and needs to be fixed.

Might be an issue with FileMaker. No assurance this will help but in Safari's General preferences uncheck the box at the bottom. Then:

Rebuild LaunchServices Database

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:

find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;

Press RETURN. Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.

Safari's preferences have long been so checked. I normally use Firefox but recently have started using Chrome.

Well this has been an interesting exercise. I did as you suggested and then restarted. I next went through my Applications folder and launched each and every application, starting with my problem child, FileMaker Pro. It came up without a message. Some others, none of which were virgins, received the warning message. They were: Firefox 10.0, Sandvox 2.5, GraphicConverter 7.6, VueScan 9.0.76, Seashore 0.5.1 and VLC 1.1.12.

I now have a base and date when I can say for certainty that these files were opened and should have been recorded by the System as "trusted" files.
