I sometimes get the outgoing sound of mail going out when nothing was sent.

This happens when I start the application even though I had nothing the the pending file.

I check to see if there is something new in the Sent box and there isn't.

Perplexing...

Twice when I awaken my I-Mac, OSX 10.7, I hear the sound of mail sending, one right after another. Both times this happened the MAIL program was open. The first time the sound continued for some time, and I do not recall what I did to stop it. Yesterday it happened again and stopped by itself after about 10 send sounds, in quick succession. I checked both the MAIL and the THUNDERBIRD mail programs and neither showed anything sent. This has only happened twice, and at the moment the computer wakes up it is happening, never when I am working on the computer, except, of course, when I am actually sending a message.

This sound (on my MacBook anyway) is always an iCal reminder that sends mail to myself or someone else automatically (pay that bill! etc.) and pre-determined by your own setting. It happens periodically when you turn on your computer to catch up with the time you chose. It also happens with ChronoSync. After the scheduled automatic sync is done, it will send an email to me to confirm this..

So if you have any apps that are on a scheduled time of day for email reminders I think that is the reason.

I have had the same problem for some time. When I plug my Macbook Pro at the office, without opening it, into power, ethernet and Mini DisplayPort (for external display) I get repeated sounds of sending e-mails and also the repeated sound of there being no mail when checking mail. I have a number of e-mail accounts in Mail, several POP, several Hotmail and several G-mail. There are never any e-mails noted as sent. I have been concerned that this is a security problem, but Norton Internet Security has never complained. Both sounds are the ones used by Mail. I never have a similar problem when just opening the laptop and having it wake up without the connections.

I have the same problem. Sometimes, when waking my computer from sleep, I get a constant stream of both new mail and sent mail sounds that don't stop until I exit Mail. It goes "bing bing bing bing whoosh whoosh bing bing bing bing whoosh bing bing bing bing bing whoosh whoosh." When I look at my inbox, I may only have 1 new email and no sent mail. I do have some notifications set up, but after all those sends and receives sounds, I don't actually receive any email notificaitons. It's just the sounds. It is a bit spooky. Hopefully someone who knows what their talking about can look into this.

Update.

The whoshh, bing, bing, whoosh, bing bing bing thing etc, etc also happened once when just opening the MacBook Pro in a new environment, without connecting to the screen etc. I will continue to "test" and see if the problem is can be isolated to any specific program being open when the "event" happens. I am also quite happy to see that I am not alone.

Not sure if I'm glad or sorry that it's not just me with this problem. MacBook Pro running 10.7.2 and getting 'sent' mail sound on wake (sounds like many mails being sent). I have checked for the FlashBack virus and tried to monitor network settings, but cannot really see that Mail is doing anything. There is no 'sent' mail or any deleted mail. Also noticed that the mac is really unresponsive during this time, normally it's wake and go.

This has been happening to me for the last few weeks, but there are some other issues too.

When I wake my machine (MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.3), the sign on screen appears, then goes black. I can get the screen back by touching F1 or disconencting the magsafe. This is every time I close the lid and open while connected to a power source.

Quite often, this shenanigans is accopanied by the BING, BING, WHOOSH that has been described in this thread.

I have tried resetting the PRAM and other such things, And as this, for me, coinsided with the 10.7.3 update, closely anyway, I tried to reinstall that update. Nothing has fixed the issue.

Same thing happening here - for while now. When I wake my iMac from sleep, I get the bing, bing, bing etc. sound of a message being sent.

There's nothing in the sent folder - and I'm pretty sure as others have said, that its iCal reminders being sent. Problem is - they shouldn't need to be sent all the time, only on certain days (and not that many). Plus, the bing, bing is continous. It doesn't stop. I've let it run for a while in the past and the only way to stop it appears to be to quit the Mail app.

Its not a huge issue - but I'd love a way to fix it.

I can't even see an easy way of checking all the reminders going out. So I couldn eliminate which one or one's might be the culprit.

Yeah, I get this in 10.7.3

I noted that when I was sending mail yesterday, no 'sent noise' was being made. However, when I wake up the computer, it starts going off (not every day though).

A theory I have is that the sound is placed in a queue when sending each email but doesn't play. When I wake the computer, the queue is released and sounds play.

Dunno, just an idea?
