I sometimes get the outgoing sound of mail going out when nothing was sent.

This happens when I start the application even though I had nothing the the pending file.

I check to see if there is something new in the Sent box and there isn't.

I sometimes get the outgoing sound of mail going out when nothing was sent.

Are you certain it's not the sound for there being no new mail? Have you tried changing the sound, then quitting and restarting Mail to see if that is indeed the sound you hear?

    Yes, I am certain.

No new mail gives me a "Ting".

The sound that happens only now and then is the "Whoosh!" sound made by an outgoing e-mail.

    Thanks for trying...

Try changing the sound to something else, quit Mail and restart it several times to see if you hear the new sound, then switch it back to the old one and see if the problem continues.

Twice when I awaken my I-Mac, OSX 10.7, I hear the sound of mail sending, one right after another.  Both times this happened the MAIL program was open. The first time the sound continued for some time, and I do not recall what I did to stop it.  Yesterday it happened again and stopped by itself after about 10 send sounds, in quick succession.  I checked both the MAIL and the THUNDERBIRD mail programs and neither showed anything sent.  This has only happened twice, and at the moment the computer wakes up it is happening, never when I am working on the computer, except, of course, when I am actually sending a message.

This sound (on my MacBook anyway) is always an iCal  reminder that sends mail to myself or someone else automatically (pay that bill! etc.) and pre-determined  by your own setting. It happens periodically when you turn on your computer to catch up with the time you chose. It also happens with ChronoSync. After the scheduled automatic sync is done, it will send an email to me to confirm this..

So if you have any apps that are on a scheduled time of day for email reminders I think that is the reason.

I had the exact same issue several times: when waking the mac I hear the sound of e-mail being sent. The last time 3 of 4 times before I quit the Mail app thinking of some virus or worm doing terrible things to my address book =)

No signs of sent mails in the outbox, though.

I have had the same problem for some time. When I plug my Macbook Pro at the office, without opening it, into power, ethernet and Mini DisplayPort (for external display) I get repeated sounds of sending e-mails and also the repeated sound of there being no mail when checking mail. I have a number of e-mail accounts in Mail, several POP, several Hotmail and several G-mail. There are never any e-mails noted as sent. I have been concerned that this is a security problem, but Norton Internet Security has never complained. Both sounds are the ones used by Mail. I never have a similar problem when just opening the laptop and having it wake up without the connections.

Jotz, wouldn't there be evidence that mail was sent in the sent mailbox if there were reminders sent?  I have the same concern about multiple mail-sent sounds.  Someone from Apple should address this because it makes many of us worried that there is somebody hijacking our email account to send spam or worse.

I have the same problem.  Sometimes, when waking my computer from sleep, I get a constant stream of both new mail and sent mail sounds that don't stop until I exit Mail.  It goes "bing bing bing bing whoosh whoosh bing bing bing bing whoosh bing bing bing bing bing whoosh whoosh."  When I look at my inbox, I may only have 1 new email and no sent mail.  I do have some notifications set up, but after all those sends and receives sounds, I don't actually receive any email notificaitons.  It's just the sounds.  It is a bit spooky.  Hopefully someone who knows what their talking about can look into this.

My thanks to all of you who responded to my question.

I am still having the same thing happen now and then when I open Mail but I somehow feel much better just knowing that I am no alone!

I agree, if this is happening to a lot of us, Apple should do something about it...  (Makes me a bit paranoid!)

The whoshh, bing, bing, whoosh, bing bing bing thing etc, etc also happened once when just opening the MacBook Pro in a new environment, without connecting to the screen etc. I will continue to "test" and see if the problem is can be isolated to any specific program being open when the "event" happens. I am also quite happy to see that I am not alone.

I'm wondering if anyone has gone to the genius bar to ask about this.  I'm also wondering if there is some way to notify Apple that a bunch of us are concerned about this problem.

We get this series of sounds on my wife's Macbook Pro running Lion.  It makes me wonder if there is some virus involved.

Not sure if I'm glad or sorry that it's not just me with this problem. MacBook Pro running 10.7.2 and getting 'sent' mail sound on wake (sounds like many mails being sent). I have checked for the FlashBack virus and tried to monitor network settings, but cannot really see that Mail is doing anything. There is no 'sent' mail or any deleted mail. Also noticed that the mac is really unresponsive during this time, normally it's wake and go.
