So if I have, say, 600 photos and movies that I took on my phone that are in my camera roll I have to delete them one by one? I imported them and saved them on my iMac with Preview, so now I have two copies - one on my phone and one on my iMac. I want the space back on my phone - is there no way to delete them once connected via USB?

PLEASE don't tell me to sync in iTunes to an empty folder or anything like that. I've tried all that, but since the photo's didn't get on my phone from a sync, I can't seem to get rid of them that way.

I did not see an option to "delete photo's from phone" when I imported thru Preview. I tried the same thing using iPhoto.

HELP...when I had a PC I could just use windows explorer to select and delete...why is this so hard on a Mac?

You can delete them after importing to iPhoto, copied from

Copying personal photos and videos from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer

If you have a Mac

You can import pictures from your iOS device using iPhoto (if installed):

  1. Connect the device to your computer. iPhoto should automatically launch into its import window with your device's images and videos listed.
Note: If iPhoto does not automatically open, you may wish to enable the behavior.
    User uploaded file
  2. Click Import All. If you want only some of your images imported, select the images and videos you would like to import into iPhoto, then click the Import Selected button.
  3. When the photos finish importing, you will be presented with a dialog asking whether you'd like to delete the original photos from your Camera Roll. Click Delete Photos.
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.

iTunes can't delete the photos in the camera roll, only those photos you sync from iTunes to your phone can be deselected in the photo pane and will be removed during the following sync.

If you import the photos from the phone to your computer using the camera wizard in Windows in XP for example, you will be asked if you want to delete them after they got copied to your HD.

If you're running Vista or 7:

If you have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC

To import photos or video from your device to Windows:

  1. Connect your iOS device to the computer. If the AutoPlay window appears, click "Import Pictures and Videos using Windows", then skip to step 4. If the "Import Pictures and Video" dialog appears, skip to step 4.
Note: If the AutoPlay dialog box does not automatically open, you may need to enable the behavior.
    User uploaded file
  2. Choose Start > Computer.
  3. Right-click the logo for your device and click Import pictures and videos.
  4. Click the Import Settings link.
  5. In the resulting window, you can change the folder to which your Camera Roll's photos will be imported by clicking the Browse button next to the "Import to" field. By default, these will be imported to the My Pictures folder.
  6. Enable the option, "Always erase from device after copying".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers. If you do not want Windows to delete pictures from your camera on subsequent imports, remember to come back here and disable this option when you're finished.
  7. After setting your import options, click OK to dismiss the window.
  8. Choose a tag if desired and click Import. This screen appears only while the import process is active:
    User uploaded file
  9. Once the import is complete, Windows Photo Gallery will launch with your photos and videos highlighted under the "Recently Imported" section:
    User uploaded file

If you find that not all your photos were imported from your device's Camera Roll after performing the above steps, you can either copy the photos to your computer using Windows Explorer, or you can use additional software such as Windows Live Photo Gallery or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later to import all pictures. To copy the photos to your computer using Windows Explorer:

  1. Connect the iOS device to the computer.
  2. Choose Start > Computer.
  3. Double-click the logo for the device to browse its camera folders.
  4. Navigate to [iOS device]\Internal Storage\DCIM\100APPLE.
  5. Manually copy the content in this folder to your computer, wherever you would like to store it.
  6. Disconnect your device. Open the Camera Roll and manually delete all the pictures from the iPhone Camera Roll that you just imported.

To copy the photos to your computer using Windows Live Photo Gallery or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later, refer to the documentation of the application you wish to use.Find more information about transferring media from your device to a PC using:

hi all,

same issue here. was working before (not sure which iOS version) but is now broken. copies some of some of the photos and hangs when trying to erase the photos from phone. pc is running windows7 and must be rebooted to get back running.

i suspect a incompatibility with recent iOS photo related changes.

hopefully someone will post a fix.
