Why does it take 30 seconds to sleep after the 10.7.3 update?

After applying the 10.7.3 combo update it now take 30 seconds between the time I select sleep from the menu (or press the power button) on my 2.66GHz Mac Pro. It used to be instant.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I don't know but I have seen some slowness with other things. Like unchecking and then rechecking File Sharing in the sharing section of system preferences.

Use to be Snap off Snap back on. Now it is Click, wait a second, O F F, Click to recheck, wait a second, O N.

Also my boot time has increased slightly.

I'm thinking of going back to .2

.3 doesn't do anything for me.

Yeah I got nothing better to do tonight.

Still no joy. Have cleared caches, reset power manager, explored pmset, and tried to sleep in a new account that has no extra fiddly-bits that we add to our machines. Still takes 30 seconds (exactly!) to power down to sleep mode.

Annoying! When I push the power button (or choose "sleep" from the menu) I want my computer to sleep IMMEDIATELY like it used to do!

I have the same problem on my macpro desktop. Sleep use to be instant, now it takes almost exactly 30 seconds . Strange though.... I did the update on my macbook pro and my wives imac and they both still go to sleep instantly. I haven't installed any new programs since the update so I don't have a clue as to what is going on with it. Any ideas out there?

Exactly the same here now on Mac OS X 10.7.3 on my 2009 Mac Pro. The computer used to sleep manually within a couple of seconds and would automatically sleep when left idle.

Now however manual sleep works but takes roughly 30 seconds. The display goes black immediately with just the cursor remaining visable during this period and the fans and drives are still running. Auto sleep when idle does not happen. Using the terminal command pmset -g there is nothing showing as preventing it and I have no print jobs stuck.

I have tried quiting all open applications, detaching the only piece of hardware I have added recently (a USB headset) and reinstalling the 10.7.3 Combo updater to get the "b" build.

I had wondered about the Dropbox beta or Messages beta I am running but with both not running the issue persists. The only other thing I wondered is if it is because I have a UPS connected as I have read reports of MacBook Pro machines sleeping only on battery power...

Matthew,

Again, this started when I installed the combo 10.7.3 update. Unlike you, my screen does dot go to black-except-cursor, but remains at the desktop (or whatever app I'm in), but simply takes 30 seconds exactly to sleep. I do have a Belkin UPS attached, and I'll try to unplug the USB cable and see what happens. Also remember that I've tested this in a new unsullied user, so it's probably not anything I'm running. Another possibility is that I have 2 RAID arrays connected via eSATA, but I had those before the update and they did not seem to affect sleep then. Could be that Apple changed the way they handle eSATA.

I'm on a 2006 Mac Pro (details below).

Would be nice if we could get some help from an Apple engineer on this issue (hint, hint...)

Still no love from apple....

After messing around with it more I find that I can get my monitor to instantly go to sleep but the desktop still takes 30 seconds. There has been a couple of times that it was slow on coming out of sleep mode also. I still find it confusing that my macbook pro and my wife’s imac both go to sleep as they always did. This is only effecting my macpro desktop.

I have 4 internal drives: 3 - 1TB Seagate barracudas and the main drive is WD 500 gb.

Found the cause of the 30 second sleep delay for me - it is my Apple iSight Camera.

Once disconnected the computer would sleep instantly again.

Don't know if any of you also have one of these or some other FireWire device attached?

I will also test auto sleep tomorrow to see if that works now.

I use my iSight regularly so hope Apple will fix the bug.

Hi Lanny,

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I have since tested automatic sleep on my machine and I did get that to work again as well with the iSight disconnected and once I had quit my open applications (the first time one of them must have been preventing it).

There must be something slightly different about your particular setup. You mentioned iChat - I am running the Messages beta which could be a factor although I confident the sleep bug is something introduced with 10.7.3 although the specific iSight kernel extension doesn't appear to have been updated recently.

My best guess is that it is something to do with the core operating system maybe related to audio or video that is loaded when the iSight is connected.

If anyone has a developer account it would be worth logging it as a bug.

Why does it take 30 seconds to sleep after the 10.7.3 update?
