Click on the house icon in the Finder's sidebar and drag it back from the main part of the window. Recent Mac OS X versions also support dragging it to the Dock directly from the sidebar.

Click on the Finder icon on your dock. It is a square with 2 blue faces in it, probably on the far left side of your dock. When it opens, you should see a list in the left column; click on the icon that looks like a house, this is your "home folder." Now you will see the contents of your home folder in the right pane of finder. Pick the "documents" icon and drag it out of the finder and down to the dock. You must take it to the far right side of the dock, near the trashcan. Let go of your click, and the icon should stay on your dock.

If you are a former PC user, Switch 101 is helpful: type it into the search window on the support page.

Good luck!
