1920x1080 won't fill screen

I've just moved to a new monitor on my Mac Pro. At less-than-native resolution, the display fills the full screen, but when I select 1920x1080 in the Display prefs, I get an ~1 inch black border on each side of the desktop.

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an older Mac Pro (Mac Pro 1,1, Dual-Core 2.66) with a RadeonX1900 GPU. The display is a Samsung SyncMaster SA350 23" 1920x1080, connected via VGA. I've played with the on-screen adjustments for the monitor, to no avail. I've turned off all the Universal Access zoom options, mouse zoom, etc. Any other suggestions?

FWIW you are not the only one to have underscan problems with that particular monitor. A google search of "SyncMaster SA350" turned up similar problems by others, not just Macs.

But have you considered not using VGA? Why not use DVI-to-HDMI or just DVI instead? You may get better results that way.

Thank you - appreciate the info. I'm connected via VGA simply because I didn't have a DVI-to-HDMI cable (I'll get one shortly).

Another item that may be of interest: I just tried hooking the monitor up to my HP laptop (Elitebook 8740W), through VGA port, and the display filled the full width of the screen at 1920 resolution. So, it doesn't appear that this is an issue with the monitor itself.

And - that seems to have corrected the problem. I'm now connected DVI-to-HDMI (rather than DIV-to-VGA), and the display fills the entire width of the screen.
