Q: Airport base and extending network with an airport express.  I can not get my express to be recognized by the base.  I have reset set the express, but no connection.

I am having trouble getting my airport extreme base recognize my airport express.  I have updated the base and reset the express.  What am I missing?

Please download and install the much more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion

You can keep both AirPort Utility 6.0 and 5.6 on your Mac and use the one that you want.

    Once you have installed 5.6......

Open AirPort Utility 5.6 select the Airport Extreme (AEBS) and click Manual Setup

Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons

Make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Allow this network to be extended"

    Update to save changes

Post back when you have completed this step and we will tackle the AirPort Express.

I assume that you have an AirPort Express 802.11n. If you are not sure, check the model number on the side of the Express. It's A 1264.

I am having the same problem as drkirk, have done as you suggested and still can not make the AE work although AirPort Utility 5.6 thinks everything is set properly. I have an Extreme 802.11n base station and two AE 802.11g that used to extend the network until this update. Do the AirPort Express devices need to be 802.11n after the update?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

That is a totally different issue. You'll have to use the older WDS settings (which are only available in AirPort Utility 5.6)

Open AirPort Utility 5.6 and click Manual Setup

    Click the Wireless tab

Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to display the setup for WDS

Apple's instructions for WDS are here:

Thanks. I missed the need to use the Option key.

thanks, this helped me greatly as well. I installed 5.6 and didn't see the WDS settings, held option and clicked and there it was again.

Thankfully fixing my network was as easy as re-enabling WDS on my extreme...
