In order for me to use an iPhone 3GS on tmobile, what would I need to do other than buy the iPhone unlocked?

All you need to do is buy an unlocked phone. Note that not all features of the iPhone will be available on T-Mobile, as it does not fully support the iPhone.

Thanks! So all I have to do is pop my sim in there and it will work??
Yes.
Oh ok well thanks I just wanted to get that straight. Didn't want to purchase it and for the sim to not fit.
Ps. What are some of the features that won't work on tmobile?
Also, make sure you have a SIM and not a Micro SIM. While the iPhone 4 and 4S use a Micro SIM, the 3GS uses a regular SIM. As to what feature are unavailable, I don't have T-Mobile so I don't know, but just that some features are limited.
Yes I do have a regular sim. Thanks for the advice and help!
You're welcome 🙂

There is no such thing in the US as an unlocked iPhone 3GS, at least not an officially unlocked one. Unless the device is being purchased from another country where unlocked 3GS devices are available, it has been hacked to be unlocked.
beasty,
Since T-Mobile on the US is not fully compatible with the iPhone, you will NOT get 3G data speeds, only the terribly slow EDGE. In addition, you won't get visual voice mail, FaceTime will not activate, some people have stated that MMS and iMessage will not work.
With 3 national carriers in the US that support the iPhone, I don't know why you'd want to cripple the phone by using it on T-Moble. You turn a smart phone into a dumb phone.
You can buy an unlocked iPhone 3Gs from the US Apple Online Store for $375. Don't know if they have them in the brick and mortar stores.
If you're out of contract with AT&T with a 3GS, you can contact AT&T to unlock the phone now. Takes around a week or so.
