Ipad2 app store can't download apps - get error 'item is being modified, try again later', but daughter IS able to download it just fine!

I'm unable to download almost all apps on my ipad2 now. This problem got worse now over the last 2 days. I click on the purchase, then get 'This item is currently being modified. Please try again later.'. I've tried 'rebooting' the iPad (turning it off then back on). I then asked my daughter to try downloading the same app on her ipad2, and it works just fine for her - no error message. I try again, and same error. Apple support had me reset the iPad, and it still didn't work. Apple support had me try to install it on my iTunes from my pc (windows 7 pc), and it doesn't work for me from there either.

It sounds to me like it's a problem then with my iTunes account (my iTunes account is about 6 years old) - my daughters iTunes acct, like her ipad2, is brand new. My iPad2 is a couple months old...

Since it fails on my pc iTunes, I don't think that it is a problem with my iPad.

Since my daughter can install the apps in the middle of when I'm getting the errors, I don't think that the error is correct - it can't be being modified if my daughter can download it...

3 hours with apple support was no help - they don't see any problem with my iTunes account, and just say that it must be an issue with the app...

That doesn't make sense to me when my daughter can download it just fine, and it is happening to me with SO MANY APPS!

By the way, my daughter is here in the same house with me, with wifi access being used to download the apps.

Again, it is happening with almost EVERY app I try to download now, but occasionally I am able to download an app.

I've downloaded hundreds of apps over the 2 months I've owned my iPad, and have gotten this error sporadically the whole time I've had my iPad.

At first I thought the error was valid, but now with it happening over and over again, and trying again 'hours' or a day later doesn't help, I don't see how these apps can really be 'being modified' all this time, especially when my daughter can download these apps just fine (several of them)

Is anyone else having this problem?? How to fix it???

I'm having the very same issue as you are. Trying to download some free apps and just keep getting this weird message. Using my wife's apple ID I can download the apps immediately.

At least for me, the problem appears to be solved. After having this issues arise numerous times each day for a couple weeks or more, it has not arisen at all in the last several days.

So either the problem with my account or with the server to which I'm assigned (if such assignment is static) is fixed; I'm sad to hear that others still report this issue. 😟

Is anyone else also experiencing a problem with the switcher rebooting your iPad?

Like everyone else in this thread, I'm having the same annoying issues with the app store. Foxyshadis seems to have nailed the problem and identified the issue, but it's disheartening that Apple hasn't at least acknowledged the problem and promised a fix later. My "...and N others..." count on the error message has incremented up to 15 now. ;-) The app that started it for me was "Area 51 Defense Pro HD", which was being modified during a recent sale.

There may be a related issue, though...

Another iPad user and I are having a different problem, and at this point, the only thing common between us is THIS problem mentioned in this thread. So I'm wondering, are any of you having a problem with the switcher, such that double-clicking the home button causes your iPad to reboot? You also see the same reboot behavior when you use the multitouch gestures to bring up the switcher too. You double click and then the reboot wheel comes up for a few seconds, then your iPad has rebooted. Check your system log and you'll see mention of SpringBoard crashing.

It's not consistent, and it doesn't last long, but when it does, I can double-click 4-5 times in a row and my iPad reboots each time. Then, suddenly, it's working fine again. If there are some of you out there who have seen this same behavior, maybe we can identify a way that these two issues may be related.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has hit this as well.

Here's our thread on another board documenting this issue: SpringBoard crashing on double click home

Thanks!

No. You didn't. You may have fixed some other issue, but this issue is beyond your power - unless you're an Apple engineer.

This issue being discussed in this thread is not hardware/software related. The issue is account related/specific. The issue can be reproduced on any iDevice (iphone, ipad) that uses an effected login. The problem, when it was occurring for me, happened on any iDevice that used my login. If I were to apply your fix to my ipad, how would that fix my ipad2, iphone 4, or any other idevice that uses my login.

People have been experiencing this problem on and off since the opening of the app store. Why it affects some and not others, probably has something to do with different accounts hitting different servers. My wife's idevices have not been effected yet... <knock on wood>.

Regardless, in my case, Apple got fixed what ever was broken on their end and I'm no longer plagued by the problem.

Did you experience the problem on every single app you tried to download? I didn't, and neither did anyone else I know that had the issue. I do believe it was account specific, but I don't think it had anything to do with the people trying to download. Instead, I believe it had to do with the developers and something they were doing when changing the listings for their software that messed people up. There was one thread I visit all the time where it seemed like several of us on the thread would start having the issue with certain pieces of software at the same time, but we could all download other stuff just fine.

The improtant part for me at this point, though, is that like you the problem has apparently cleared up.

Huh?

Re-reading my post and then re-reading your post... I have to ask, did you mean to reply to my post?

The only statement in your post related to mine is the last statement - even then it's a far distant cousin. Other than that, it's convoluted mess of opinion that's further hampered by a lack of clear grammatical purpose.

Back to the far distant cousin, I’m guessing you meant to say something along the lines of, "Like you, I'm no longer experiencing the problem." Instead of making a statement that the "problem" (issue that has related posts dating back to five years ago) is cleared up. Or did you mean to say that I had a problem that has apparently cleared up. If so, I need to contact my doctor and verify that their HIPAA policies are protecting my personal information. If history can be used to predict the future, then this issue is not fixed - it's just not negatively impacting my account at this time.

Have you even read through this thread? I ask because it appears that you haven't read the subject of the OP that is repeated on each post in this thread - as indicated by your wrong assumption that the issue is related to "developers and something they were doing when changing the listings for their software". If it were developer related... the OP would have left out the, "but daughter IS able to download it just fine!" part of the subject. Was your thinking/belief swayed by the erroneous message that accompanied this issue?

Not so fast tgroman… It would seem that when Victor restored his iPad from the encrypted backup, that it fixed the problem for ALL of us! We should be very grateful. 😉

I think the fact that this thread has been dormant for over a month now kind of speaks for itself. Apple has quietly fixed the problem. There will be no public admission. But the main thing is, it seems to be fixed.

And for those late to the party: yes, it affected only certain apps; yes, it affected only certain iTunes accounts; no, it was in no way device specific… when it happened on one of your iOS devices, it happened on ALL of your iOS devices.

</thread> 🙂

Yes I did mean to reply to your post, and while I have not read every single entry in the thread, I am familiar with the topic. However, I won't waste your precious thread space because obviously you don't value the opinion of anyone who isn't as adept with the English language as you are. The fact of the matter is that I was recieving the same error that the OP was, I spent several days discussing it with Apple just like they did, and more than one Apple tech told me it was a problem with the way the developers were adjusting their software listings and not anything to do with my account. So I'm sorry I offended your delicate senses and I promise not to bother you any more, since you clearly have the situation well under control and completely understand how the App Store works. I guess Apple should hire you to fix all of their problems.

Mar 24, 2012 6:05 AM in response to RustySabre

I don't value ignorance. Neither am I offended by ignorance.

I was simple trying to make you less ignorant and prevent others from being confused by your ignorance by restating the actually facts of this issue in a light-hearted fashion. At your expense? Call it the cost of choosing to involve yourself in the convo without reading the thread which leads to confusing the issue. I believe that's called trolling or hijacking.

Once again, your stated opinions are not only at odds with this thread, but also with the reality the rest of us must live. For example, Apple doesn't hire their front-line "techs". No one does. Apple has contracted with Arise to provide this service. Arise doesn't even hire them. Arise contracts this service out to anyone with a heartbeat and without a substantial criminal background. These homeshored individuals are given a bare minimum of training related to Apple tech systems for documenting issues and providing answers via a knowledge base. The afore mentioned knowledge base offers little more than what a consumer can get from Apple.com. So... in all likelihood you spoke with someone who had less information about this issue than someone who has taken the time to read this thread. You, having spoken with more than one Apple tech, (if you were being honest rather than malicious) would have to concede that you received more than one answer with none of them bearing anything close to a solution. Right?

Rusty, this post has less to do with some stranger (you) spouting ignorance in a forum on the internet, than trying to bring clarity to an issue that has frustrated many in the past and will probably frustrate many in the future. I'm sure you're a great person and far from the least common denominator in other areas of life. ****, you may save lives every day while performing brain surgery. Or you may be stationed in a war zone taking enemy fire to defend me and my family while I type this post. I really have no way of knowing. What I'm trying to say, Rusty, is that this post isn't really about you.

Mar 24, 2012 12:10 PM in response to RustySabre

Rusty, with regard to your 3/23 reply - I was the one who originally started this thread. In my case I know for a fact that it was not always caused by something developers were doing! One developer was kind enough to converse with me about their app I was having a problem with and assured me that they had made NO changes to the app for several weeks or months - the only thing they did was to lower the price.

I am convinced that the problem resided with some (but not all) apple servers - that explained why we had a problem with some apps but not all. I don't know how each app purchase gets made through a specific server, nor do I care. I suspect that certain iTunes accounts probably attach to specific servers primarily (but not all the time). This would explain why folks have had problems across devices, across countries (not all occurring in the USA), and we're able to download some apps but not others.

Btw - my daughter eventually started getting this error too...

Personally, the last time I had this issue was 2 - 3 weeks ago, after the error had disappeared for awhile. I was able to download the app several hours later with no problem. I have had NO problems since.

As others have mentioned, Apple seems to have quietly rectified the problem, with no acknowledgement of what the issue really was or what they did to fix it - it would have been nice to know in case this happens again in the future. I had been really worried about this issue with the new iPad coming out along with all the associated retina-display software changes, and am AMAZED that I've had no issues with this error in the last few weeks! Hip hip hooray!!!

I understand everyone's frustration with Apple support about this, and the fact that their support runaround mirrors so many other companies who now use external know-nothing support folks.

But PLEASE, can we just keep this thread for folks encountering the original problem, should it ever start occurring again (note my optimism in not saying 'when'!)?

PLEASE discontinue snipping back and forth at each other over level of intelligence, or the lack thereof.

PLEASE leave this thread for info about the original problem! Thanks all for your contributions!

Of all things, it looks like it's now happening to the Angry Birds Seasons HD app that just went free as the App Store App of the Day. Boy, that's probably going to cause some problems. Oddly, I was just able to download the regular Seasons no problem, so at least that'll keep me entertained until the problem is worked out.

I thought Apple would have fixed their server code to prevent this from happening again, hopefully this isn't a sign that it'll be happening all week again. Sigh, my account seems to be permanently attached to their flakiest server.

Ipad2 app store can't download apps - get error 'item is being modified, try again later', but daughter IS able to download it just fine!
