Safari won't start properly - update related??

Suddenly , when I open Safari, it doesn't start properly - I just get the spinning wheel icon and I cannot browse websites. ( Luckily, I have Chrome which is working.

I don't know if it was related the recent Delta os update so I downloaded the 'Combo' update and applied it but still Safari won't work.

I don't fancy the re-installation of Lion just to get Safari working but if there's something less drastic, perhaps someone can suggest something.

Thx in advance.

I made a test account and if anything, the computer was more troublesome. Couldn't cmd+q anything so I had to force a close down.

Safari, didn't work.

My golden rule is 'never do updates until the next one comes out and if there's no problem NEVER do 'em' was broken and now I think I am re-learning the lesson

ahh well ... I have Chrome which works fine...

That's not good news. Creating a new user account should be a trivial exercise, unless there is something wrong with your system. The fact that Chrome is working doesn't reassure me... it could be a system problem that doesn't affect Chrome because it isn't deeply embedded into the system.

I suggest two steps:

1) Boot into your recovery partion by holding COMMAND-R when you reboot your computer. Then open disk utility and do a verify disk on your main partition.

If that is ok:

2) If you have a good quality internet connection, it could be worth downloading the 10.7.3 Install Mac OS X app from the Mac App Store and reinstalling (after making an appropriate backup of course). If all goes well, your data and user accounts will be preserved, but it will work better.

Cheers,

Rodney

dastard I'm havinf the exact same issue. Try this to see if works on your system like it does for me.

Open Safari then Restart Lion with Reopen Windows When Logging Back on Checked.

When I do this Safari works fine until I close it after the restart. I'm just curiosu if this works for other people as well.

As long as you leave Safari open he entire time after you restart it works fine but the moment you Quit and try to restart it doesn't work, This makes absolutely no sense! Everything worked fine on my system BEFORE the 10.7.3 update. Waiting on a solution from Apple soon I hope. Getting sick of everyone giving the same bland solution. Fresh OS install or Reset Safari, That's not a solution,

I'm sure that I have extensions but I have tried disabling them but maybe I didn't do it correctly or I missed something. I just booted into Safe Mode and everything works great that way. If I shut down Safari and reopen it then it still works. I'm sure whatever it is that is causing this issue is simple but it's finding it that's the problem.

I did as you suggested Lanny but the problem persisted. I had to turn the machine off with Safari open and unusable.

When the reboot completed Safari worked.

I'm going to contact Apple Support later but if they want an OS re-install, I'm gonna live with the problem until a simpler solution appears from someone.

I'll post back with comments from Apple later.

You could have done a Force Quit of Safari, Cmd-Option-Escape, select Safari.

A Lion re-install is very simple. It goes over top of your current installation, dosen't remove anything and takes less than 20 minutes. If you're having problems, it is recommended.

Of course it goes without saying, that you should always have backup. I recommend using an external hard drive and a cloning software like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
