At present I only have the Yahoo account and icloud set up in the test account.  I set both up using the system preference pane for mail contacts and calenders

Crashed again with the same error:  dispatch Queue:  com.apple.mail.folderwatcher.

I cannot ever find that preference.

I did drag an attahment out of an email but that was at 5;20 pm and the crash was at 7:19 pm.  I am officially lost.

Thanks for any help and insights you can offer,

    Hi, all.

Crashed again.  Same error.  Test account has not crashed.  The offending preference file is not there.  Anyone who can help with folderwatcher, I would be most grateful.

    Debbie,

What I would like to have you do, but I know you may not be comfortable with, is to Quit Mail, and in the Finder remove all Account folders from the Mail folder, and also to remove the com.apple.mail.plist file from Home/Library/Preferences.  This would purge the existing accounts and when you next launch Mail would force you to see all the account back up again.

Remind me again if you actually forced a reindexing per the earlier instructions on how to do?

    Ernie

  • singerdf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Ernie,

Hi, again.  I did the reindexing twice as per your instructions.

I want to make sure I understand what to remove:  Here is what is in the Mail Folder:  V2: AosIMAP(icloud account), EWS (exchange account), IMAP (gmail), IMAP (yahoo), Mailboxes, MailData, RSS.

I assume you want me to move the first four folders to the desktop??

I can find the preference file.  Do I need to trash the com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile as well?

At one point I moved the whole V2 file to the desktop and it started all over.  What a mess that made.

Could there be something else running in this account (in the background) that I don't know about that is causing this to happen?  It only happens when the computer is sleeping.  It has never happened while I am at the computer.

I am really trying to think outside of the box.  Is there anything in Console we could glimmer since we know when the crash occurs?

    Debbie

  • Ernie Stamper Level 8 Level 8 (37,545 points)

Yes on the first four folders, and probably yes on the lockfile item as well.

But first, have you ever logged out of the normal User Account, and while logged into the alternate User Account allowed the Mac to sleep?

Have you ever changed the settings on the Mac so that it does not sleep for some 24 hour period?

In the Console, can you find the point just before a crash?

    Ernie

  • singerdf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

In answer to your questions:  No.  I am logged into both accounts and mail is open on both.  When it crashes in my main account, I switch to the test account and all is still running and fine.

I have not messed with the sleep settings.  I can try that if you would like.

Here is the three minutes before crash in Console:

Nothing jumps out at me.  I am  most confused by the error as I cannot find the pref file it references!

I am going to move folders and delete prefs now.  Remember it may take a few days for this to work.  I am not going to mess with the sleep yet.

    Ernie,

I thought of a few things that make this account unique:  I have a few signatures with images that I use.  And I have installed lots of free stationary.  Don't know if any of this matters, but my engineering brain says that more data is always good.

    Debbie

  • Ernie Stamper Level 8 Level 8 (37,545 points)

The only thing I noted in the Console log was some iCal items -- do you have any alarms set in iCal?  Would any stationary be selected for any alarm messages?

    Ernie

  • singerdf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

No alarms for my calendars. It is possible

The exchange has some or the subscribed

Calendars. Do not use stationary for that.

    Will keep you posted.

    Hi, Ernie,

crashed again.  same error with that pref file I cannot find.  I am at my whits end.  I can't thank you enough for your help.  With out some sort of lead, I cannot trace down where the error may be.

2/27/12 12:26:27.273 PM Mail: *** -[__NSPlaceholderArray initWithObjects:count:]: attempt to insert nil object from objects[0]

This shows up in the console log before the crash.  no better at understanding this either.

I have eliminated all of the ical errors by deleting the exchange calendar and setting it up as a delegate on my own exchange.  works great so far.

    Talk soon,

    Debbie

    Debbie,

Have you launched Disk Utility and run Verify Disk (not permissions, btw)?

    Ernie

  • singerdf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yeah.  One of the first things I did.

I am now logging the error with Apple.  They are encouraging me to re-install Lion which is fine, but I would like some understanding about the error.

    Debbie

  • singerdf Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Ernie,

I got booted up to Tier Two for tech support.  That pref file does not exist and the failing argument in Console refers to an error in the Unix code of the operating system.  For now, I am awaiting the next crash and will run the Capture Data program they sent and send the file back.

I am not crossing my fingers that there will be an easy solution.  They agree that a re-install at this juncture is premature as the same accounts do not crash the new account.

I had a similar problem with my last imac and in the end they replaced my logic board.  I do not think that is the case here, but am happy that I have some attention at Apple Support.

I can not thank you enough for your time and attention.

As soon as I learn something, I will post back.  Keep your fingers crossed.

    Debbie
