What app is using my hard drive?

My hard drive is reading or writing something and I would like to find out what is going on. Maybe a hacker is doing something, so what is the best way to know which application is doing the reading and writing?

Thanks!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Your computer has a very sophisticated operating system (OSX unix). There are many programs that run in the background that operate on the file system. There is also a built in timer that runs file specific programs at certain times. That being said, you can open up a program called "activity monitor" located in your utilities folder under apps. This will show you what is running, you can change from "windowed processes" to "all processes" and see what is there. Learn to love this program as it tells you many things about your machine.

good luck
