how to force shut down ipad while in screen lock mode?

an 'unable to download application' notice surfaced while my ipad was in screen lock mode, now it doesn't even respond to either me pushing the 'done' or 'retry' button (within the unable to download notification) or the 'slide to unlock' bar

i even tried to shutdown using the top button but it didn't respond to me trying to 'slide to power off' bar

please help, is there any way to override these? perhaps there's a certain method to force shut down without having anything to do with the screen?

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.

Have you tried a reset?

Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off".
