The problem is u r using the wrong connection ... Babies require an umbilical cord!
Electrical components and liquids (of any kind or flavor) do not mix.
I'd suggest taking it to the nearest Genius Bar and get a proper diagnosis on how to fix it.
If it got wet you might try using a hair dryer to warm the connector and dry it out. You might also have to rinse it with distiller water but don't soak it. I'm just guessing here so please be careful.
Apple stores sell replacement cables.
I probably shouldn't say this, but the world is full of charging cables that work perfectly well and cost no more than (here in the UK) a pound or two. I would not like to be depending on just one, especially if i had a baby with such expensive tastes....
Forced heat is probably not a good idea but distilled water followed by a gentle and thorough dry, e.g. in an airing cupboard or a sunny windowsill, should be OK.

Rinse in distilled water (you can boil it yourself if urgent) then put it in a cup of rice (absorps water readily) for 10-20 hours. Worked well for me with a mobile phone...
I would definitely remove it from the baby's mouth before you try to charge.

Since when have you had to charge babies? I thought food kept 'em going...?
I too had a toddler put the end of a USB cable in her mouth. No amout of washing it out or drying it ever got it working again. Get yourself down to the store and get a new one.
