Camcorder Panasonic SDR-S26

Hi, I've recently bought a new iMac running iMovie '11. When I connect my camcorder (Panasonic SDR-S26) to my iMac the movie files are in .MOD and .MOI format. I have no idea what this format is and although my Mac sees the files it cannot open the content. Does anyone know what I should do, and is there a way to convert these files to a Mac-recognisable format? Help please 🙂

Thank you for the link. I'm a real novice at this stuff, and I did a quick suffix change to .MPG and hey presto, the files opened up in QuickTime and were viewable 🙂. Will spend some time reading through to see how to convert them for iMovie as I'd like to be able to edit them if possible. Thanks again.
