How am I purchasing music with no money?

I have about $0.49 left on my itunes account and I was trying to figure out how to get more itunes money. I thought that if I bought a song over my $0.49 limit, it would give me the option to purchase more itunes money. The song I chose was the regular song price of $1.29, and when I clicked 'purchase' it bought the song for me? But I only had $0.49 left? I don't know how that occurred, but I'm thinking it took money from my debit card account and used that to complete my purchase. Also when I looked onto my debit account it said itunes took $0.80 out of my account. Bottom line is can I purchase itunes money online instead of making unknown purchases, plus I'd really like an explanation for what ENTIRELY just happened. Thank you!

You bought something for $1.29. It used the $.49 credit and then billed your card on file for the remaining $.80 as it should. Why is this confusing?

You can buy itunes cards.

Not sure why you call it unkown. You chose the song that you bought. You knew what the purchase was and how much it cost. This was not unkown at all. Everything worked exactly as it should.
