I just got new iMac, but old programs will not work on Lion. I have files in word and excel for mac 2004 I need to access. What advice? Buy new software? Can I then read old files? I do not want to have maintain two computers on my desk.

O.K. but..everyone I am working with uses word and excel, we are a small non-profit publishing group. And, openoffice did not say, in web site, that it will help me read existing text and spreadsheets. Want to illuminate me?
OpenOffice will read Word and Excel files, but I've never been overly impressed with it. You can certainly use it if you're reluctant to spend money, but if you're accustomed to Word and Office, you can just upgrade to a newer version of Office.

You can also give LibreOffice a try: http://www.libreoffice.org/download. It should read your old files just fine as well as current M$ Office files.
In addition to the third-party applications offered by others here, you could also just buy a newer version of the Microsoft Office software.
