Perhaps the item you are searching for does not exist.
Yes I have ticked off the appropriate apps.
What are you searching for in Spotlight?
When I go to the first page you could put the cursor by the magnifying glass and you could type. As you typed a list would appear showing different items pertaining to what you typed now nothing happens. You type in a complete item and hit search and still nothing happens. Doesn't matter what you type in.
I have absolutely no idea why you cannot search then. You have enabled all the apps in Spotlight Search so in reality it should work. Have you tried a reset to see if that helps Reset the iPhone by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider. Then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing the reset.
I have done a search on the forum and found a large discussion thread on the issue of Spotlight not working. It appears to be a bug in the iOS 5. (although personally I'm not experiencing it). The workaround seems to be to disable e-mail from the search in Settings>General>Spotlight Search>Mail> deselect. It may well be that the bug will be fixed in the next update but of course I can't guarantee that. This is the link to the thread if you want to see what others are saying about the issue https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404037?start=30&tstart=0
