can the police trace a stolen mac if the mac has no "track my mac" on iCloud but may be using the internet. I.E IP address?
As i have said in my lats question he had track my mac off before the robbers came and he is wondering (he has no tracking software) if the police can track it such as using IP address?

It cannot be tracked through the IP address because if it's connected at a different location and probably through a different ISP then it will get a different IP address. Anyway, in most cases it will be behind a router/firewall on a local network and have a local IP address rather than one delivered by an ISP. The only way of tracking it would be through it's mac address (note 'mac address' has nothing to do with 'Mac').
If the thief uses your data to steal your identity, for example by accessing bank accounts, then theoretically the police could track the machine by IP address. But you've already changed the passwords on those accounts, of course.
I don't think they will actively track it. They have other things to do. If your computer turns up while they are investigating some other crime, and if they have the serial number and your contact info they will contact you, or in this case the insurance company since they mage the theft report.
That's a question to ask your insurers. Normally if you recover the stolen item while the claim is pending settlement then you would withdraw your claim. If the stolen item is recovered after settlement then the MacBook belongs to the insurance company.
yeah. well its not on track my mac, the insurance copany know, it hasnt got ny personal info on, but we dont know the MAC address or have any idea on where to find it or how we could find it so we have no hopes?
oh well, hopefully we will catch these people..

And actually we one guy behind bars.. We found out today because they took 3 of our laptops and one of our has been recovered somehow when police have been to there place and and have him in custody..
So again hopefully they will find the mac in time as it was no long since it was took.

yes we have contacted the police, but what my question is, is can the police track it?
And my answer is - possibly, if you know the mac address. Emphasise "possibly", obviously there are no guarantees. You should file a claim with your insurers.
I noticed the insurance company has registered it as stolen. on apple.com. if it possibly gets recovered and i somehow get it back, what do i do?
