Enabling journaling / Lion
Lion install says I need to enable journaling on my HD, but when I go into Disk Utility, HD shows already journaled and the enable journaling button is greyed out. Ideas?

Right- I get that. Should have said that. The problem is (it would seem) that the Lion install does not see this and will not let me install to the HD b/c it thinks journaling is enabled.
So perhaps my question should have been -- why would Lion see a disk as "journaling enabled" when in fact the disk utility shows it is?
......will not let me install to the HD b/c it thinks journaling is enabled.
You mean to say that it thinks that journaling isn't enabled.
It sounds like that it should work.
yes. Lion thinks journaling is not enabled, but disk utility thinks journaling is enabled.
I'm stumped. Try doing a disk repair to the HD. You'll have to boot from another hard drive or partition.
I'm having the same issue.
Seems like there should be some other (simple) solution.
My issue is simple-- the guys in my office installed a partition to have MS Windows office and other apps run but we decided against it. So they erased the content on the partition to provide more space on the SSD but it is stuck on this partition. Now we just need to remove the partition..
so in bootcamp assistant it says "can't use bootcamp because you must have journaling enabled." Go to disk utiltiy and enable it. Sure thing.
yes, but it is.
So go to disk utility. Sure enough, it is enabled. Cant' even "disable" it. It's there for good, it seems. Ok
Back to deleting/removing the partition? We are stuck in a loop, because we can't use bootcamp assistant.
So is there a hack that will allow us to delete (if not remove) the partition and make the space available in the SSD again.
Thx
M
You remove the Bootcamp partition by using the Bootcamp Assistant app, not by using Disk Utility.
Yes we agree. However bootcamp assistant refuses to allow me to engage, saying that I have to enable journaling.
Fine, but journaling already is enabled. When using Disk Utility, the "enable journaling" is greyed-out, as it should be. In the most recent OS, disk journaling is enabled by default.
If I could get Disk Utiliy to allow me to "disable" then "enable" journaling maybe this would do the trick. But the button (green) is unresponsive.
Once we can get bootcamp assistant to run then we'll go through the normal removal routine I suppose.
But the loop is that bootcamp assistant won't allow us to run because it thinks that the drives/partitions are not journaling-enabled. And the Disk Utility is showing that it is.
thx!

here is the circular loop we're in:
Bootcamp assistant thinks we need to enable journaling. Won't let us get past this screen otherwise.
Ok so we then go to Disk Utility to enable journaling like a good compliant user...
no matter which disk image or partition we select, they are both enabled for journaling.
Or the greyed-out button seems to infer. However the button is unresponsive.
Thus we're stuck in a loop.
and
Any thoughts on how to hack bootcamp assistant, or otherwise remove the partition?
thx

On the lefthand side panel of Disk Utlity, are you just highlighting the ex bootcamp partition, and not the top selection or the Macintosh HD selection? Then check the Enable Journaling option.
Based on your 2nd picture the partition is not mounted. You have to mount it before enabling Journaling. Control click it and select mount the drive.
If you can't mount the drive, you're out of luck. What happens when you attempt to mount it?
It appears that the partition is damaged to the point that not even the Repair Disk button is available.
Once it's mounted, are you not able to remove it, using the partition tab and the minus sign?
It appears that your only option would be to clone your existing Macintosh HD partition to an external hard drive with something like CarbonCopy cloner. Test it, to verify that the clone is bootable, Then repartition your internal as 1 partition, and then clone the external back to the internal.
Obvioulsy, as you're aware by now, only use the Boot Camp Assistant to create and remove the Boot Camp partition.
