It is already built into iOS/iBooks - Touch a word...hold...release...select 'Define'
Really?! I did not see it. I'm off to find it, I'll be right back. .......
Is this built into iAuthor, because I am not finding it.
It has nothing to do with iBooks Author. It is part of iOS and works in your book without action by you to make it happen.
Preview your book on iPad and you can see for yourself.
Well KT we are in the iAuthor forum, how is this made to happen? Do you know? Can you explain it?
Nice troll....thanks for taking a run at me - better luck next time.
Seriously, does anyone actually know how to do this in iAuthor? Is it possible?
If you don't have the answer, no need to write. - Fabe
K T already gave you THE answer.
PS: There is no such thing as iAuthor.
Rysz - can you explain the answer? Seriously. How does someone working in iAuthor create a pop-out to give a word definition? If it can only be done in iOS, does that mean everyone must become an iOS developer? Don't pile on, rise Rysz, to a higher level. - Fabe

I don't know how to state it any clearer than that. Open any book in iBooks and test for yourself.
Thanks for responding. Are you telling me that every word in every book created in the ibook format has a pop-out happen as you place your finger on them? How does the book know what the definition is? I'm not necessarily talking about the Merriam-Webster definition. I'm talking about definitions created by educators to enhance their work. I'm talking about definition in context. I'm asking how to create this pop-outs for specific tasks.
It appears to me iAuthor cannot do this. I put in a request to Apple for this feature. Thanks. - Fabe
Word definitions are built into iOS as explained above and use the built-in dictionary.
What you want is a Glossary. It already is a feature of iBooks Author. You can find the description and instructions on how to create here:
Thanks Rysz.
I've become familiar with the Glossary and Index links to those terms in iAuthor. It's a good feature, one I will use extensively, but bottom line, what I am trying to acheive is a contextual pop-out right on the page with the text. I am not looking specifically for the dictionary definition, but a contextual definition created by the author. (Using the word "definition" in the title of this blog focused too narrowly). Here's an example of what I am looking to do:
Here is a pop-out after a graphic roll-over. It is similar to what I wish to do. I want the reader to tap on a word and get a pop-out with the author's own description. I'll save the stylistic part for later.
Is this possible in iAuthor? If so, how? - Fabe
Not quite what you are looking for but this may work for you?
Clik on > WIDGETS
Chose > INTERACTIVE IMAGE
A template will appear
Drag your Image onto the template
The template will now be overlaying your image with its image-labeling text-boxs
Next type into the image-labeling text-boxs provided
Then drag the line coming off any particular image-labeling text-box to the place on the image you want to highlight
Next adjust the zoom level and position of the image to show the zoomed view you want to be displayed when the reader clicks on that specific image-labeling text-box
Now clik > SET VIEW
step and repeat for all other image-labeling text-boxs
Click the + sign to create another image-labeling text-box
