Stuck during startup after force quit with power button

So I have an old "vintage" Macbook with Tiger as my OS. I have all sorts of sleep issues with it, and recently after accidentally hitting the sleep button, I had to force quit the machine by holding down the power button because it was just (beachball) spinning when I tried to start it up again.

I went to start it up and I get the gray screen with the apple on it and the spinning "clock hands" this goes on until I get a darker screen without apple and more spinning. It stays there. We've tried a host of solutions including the resetting through battery removal, we've tried to "archive and reinstall", etc... My wife thinks it is still stuck in sleep mode but not sure what to do.

HELP!

It seems you disk is dying. The best way to check this is with another mac connecting your mac in target mode (restart and press T after chime). This turn it into an external drive. Backup all your data (make a copy somewhere) and test your disk. You may do that with Apple Hardware Test on one of the two DVDs you should have, choose the long test.

If this sounds too complicated, then ask a technician to look at it.

You may also have a corrupt system; even if less probable, cannot be excluded.

Before anything else, backup your data, in case disk is inded dying as I suspect.
