After closing the lid and then opening again my system does not appear to wake up. Sometimes I hear something happening when I click a few keys but no screen output. I have to shut down and reboot. This time I had the mail client running but nothing else. This is after installing the new O/S.
Please rest SMC, and also do PRAM, some of your issues may be solved right from that.
If it continues, we can try to dig deeper.

Reset your PRAM by holding the ALT+CMD+P+R keys while turning on the Mac.
To reset your SMC you just pull out all cable's of the mac, keep it like that for 2 minutes.
