Feb 7, 2012 8:23 AM in response to bradley254by Brian Nesse,Using the combo updater doesn't work for Lion. You need to download a 10.7.3 Installer from the App Store. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4178

Feb 7, 2012 9:06 AM in response to Brian Nesseby piperspace,Brian please clarify. I studied the reference you kindly provided carefully and I am still confused.
Are you saying there is a combo updater for Lion but it will never be possible to use that as a basis for imaging?
So, if I have a reference machine with Lion and all my apps on it and I want to upgrade Lion I have to start over?

Feb 7, 2012 9:33 AM in response to bradley254by Meis2183,I've had the same issue too. After updating my lastest image with 10.7.3 with the combo updater, upgrading the server and recreating the image; my client computer's hang at the gray Apple logo too.

Feb 8, 2012 7:44 AM in response to Meis2183by piperspace,★HelpfulOn 3rd read I finally processed the part in the reference saying that we need to run the 10.7.3 Installer before imaging a reference system that is already at 10.7.3. Has anyone tried applying the combo 10.7.3 update and then running the 10.7.3 Installer so that the reference system is "really" at 10.7.3? Does that work?

Feb 8, 2012 10:17 AM in response to piperspaceby Brian Nesse,From the attached link: (emphasis added)
Important: Even if the computer you are imaging has the latest version of Mac OS X installed, you must update it using the latest version of the installer to create an image that supports multiple Macs. You can redownload the installer on a computer running OS X Lion by pressing and holding the Option key while you click the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store application.

Feb 8, 2012 10:24 AM in response to piperspaceby Brian Nesse,You don't need to update to 10.7.3 and then run the 10.7.3 installer. Just download and run the 10.7.3. installer... skip the update entirely.
In 10.5 & 10.6 the Combo updater contained scripts that "fixed" the OS, which the Delta updaters did not. In 10.7 those scripts no longer exist, thus you must do a full install of the OS (which is really an in place upgrade).
The added advantage to using the installer is that the Recovery HD will be upgraded as well. This does not occur with the software update.

Feb 13, 2012 2:15 PM in response to Brian Nesseby ErikB.,Installing 10.7.3 from the App Store fixed this issue for me. Running the combo update still hung at boot.

Feb 23, 2012 2:59 PM in response to Brian Nesseby etbozo,The AppStore downloads took forever, then the OS reinstall, but that did the trick for me. Thanks, Brian.

Feb 28, 2012 2:28 PM in response to bradley254by Bupsy,I experienced the same issue and can confirm that an in place upgrade using the App Store provided Lion installer worked.

Dec 12, 2012 2:06 PM in response to bradley254by Diana Valdez,Any idea of where I can get the 10.7.3 client update. All I see that's available now is the client combo and that won't work.

Dec 13, 2012 8:03 AM in response to Diana Valdezby Brian Nesse,Why not just update using the 10.7.5 installer? Apple replaces older installers with newer ones. If you haven't already got a copy of the 10.7.3 installer, you can't get it through the App Store.

Dec 13, 2012 8:48 AM in response to bradley254by Diana Valdez,Maybe I'm wrong but doesn't 10.7.5 require that 10.7.4 already be installed. I am trying to create a 10.7.5 image but I am currently only on 10.7.1. When I downloaded 10.7.5 it stated that I needed 10.7.4. Downloaded that one as well and it stated that I needed 10.7.3. The only 10.7.3 download that I can find is the combo one and it will not work as I get the grey screen when trying to netboot to that image. Am I missing something?

Dec 14, 2012 8:04 AM in response to Diana Valdezby Brian Nesse,You need to get the Mac OS X Installer, from the App Store, not the software update from apple.com. As discussed above in this thread, the software updater will not generate a functional image.
The 10.7.5 installer has no previous system requirements, it is a complete OS install and will install on anything including an empty volume.
